Start off well then fall behind

    Hi Guys!

So what is the best approach to study for FAR? I started off doing lectures, read/notes, and do the MCQ but I am falling behind on the MCQ’s. Im on Chapter 4 now and I have not attempted any of the MCQ’s for the chap but are half way in my lectures. This happened for AUD for me. I ended up watching all the lectures then doing the MCQ and that probably took more time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

When I studied, I did the same (watch lecture, read and make notes, and do MCQ). My first runs through the MCQ for almost every homework sets were pretty bad. Since FAR is the most difficult, I think its pretty normal to not understand everything your first time around. I just answered as much questions as I could and moved on.

I gave myself enough time to go through all 10 chapters again a second time, this time really watching the lectures and understand everything as well as make flashcards of the formulas and mnemonics before attempting the questions again.

There were still plenty of questions I could never figure out the answer to, but the actual test felt much easier than the questions Becker threw at me.

I passed the test with answering only 75% of all total questions in each chapter. Not recommending that you aim that low but just know it is doable.

Thanks for your reply Jeff. Did you supplement with anything else? I am unsure whether I will have all the time to watch the lectures again. What else do you suggest? Like specifically pay attention to any topics etc. I know a lot of people say JE and government not for profit is a big one.

No I did not supplement with anything else. If you don't have time to rewatch all the lectures again, then as you work the MC's the first time, note the areas that you don't understand well and go back to them after you are done with everything.

I think I looked at F2, F3, and F5 a lot because I felt like those were pretty important. I did get quite a few govt accounting questions, though they were nowhere near as difficult as Becker's.

If it makes you feel better, I still did not feel fully prepared a few hours before the exam. I just could not wrap my head around pensions and govt accounting and essentially gave up on them a few days test and focused most of my attention on all the others.

Oh, make sure you look at derivatives and hedges too. Definitely do not ignore IFRS

Thank you. I do notice a lot of IFRS and GAAP on becker so I would not doubt them being covered on the exam. Would you say Becker's practice exam was close to the actual? and how did you do on those? Just curious. Good Luck with Audit on the 26th!

Confession: I actually didn't do any practice exams. I got cold feet and was scared of the results that I didn't take it. I did take plenty of comprehensive progress tests though. My scores varied wildly, from low 60's all the way to 90.

Thanks! Audit is definitely much more manageable than FAR

I agree Audit is easy in the sense its all conceptual and no computations. Wow and you still did really well on the exam! Awesome job.

I just spent a lot of time reading, memorizing, and re-doing questions.

Not gonna lie, I was depressed… Sucked having to study while everyone was having fun for Christmas and New Years. You might feel the same way too but just remember you'll eventually get through it.

That is exactly how I am feeling. I have been missing family events the last few weeks and it is hard to concentrate on studying while waiting for the scores to come out. FAR just isn't clicking for me or its the amount of material that is making me hate to study for this section.

Yeah I felt there was a lot of material too. One of the things I did a week from my test was to review 3 chapters a day to make sure you're never more than 3 days from the last time you looked at any particular topic. Makes it a bit easier to manage everything and make sure you don't forget something.

That is a very good strategy. May have to try that. I can barely recall the chapter 1 basic stuff like rule of conservatism. I am just really nervous for this exam. I do plan on purchasing Ninja after I go through becker my first time around. And Hit Ninja and Becker progress test over and over during the review week. Hope that will give me a pass.
