    Vent time!

So I will first off start out by saying I am a colossal moron!

I had 3 exams under my belt and applied to multiple CPA firms in my area towards the end of last year. I put an email on my resume that was set up to auto forward to my “regular” email that I check multiple times a day. I ended up getting a call from one of the firms and went through the rigamaroll and was eventually offered a job. I accepted gave my two weeks to my industry job, and transitioned right before tax season. All fine and dandy, I love being in public accounting, this firm is fantastic (as far as I know), and I have learned a lot. I finished my 4th exam during tax season and am now licensed as a CPA which is crazy awesome and it STILL hasn’t sunk in.

Today I told someone to email me a flyer for a fundraiser to my email that gets forwarded……I see I haven’t gotten it, and ask them to send it again…….still nothing, so I log into my “forwarded” account and sure enough the auto forward was disabled for some god unknown reason!!!! I look through the history and I was contacted by FOUR of the other firms and a large local bank regarding an internal auditor position saying they are VERY interested in interviewing with me!!!!

I am furious!!!! And I have no one to truly be mad at but myself. I of course replied to all the emails explaining my deepest apologies and what happened.

    I’m gonna go barf now………ugh……….

This is depressing but at the end of the day the worst thing that happened was you gave up great jobs in favor of a good job. You're still a CPA who could potentially get that attention again if you really wanted to.

I use a forwarded email address on my resume, too, and have been fearful of having this happen. 😐 Worst I've actually had happen was logging into the actual address on my phone to reply to an email from a prospective employer (logging into the address itself was the only way to have the forwarded address show as the “From” address) while on a break at work, then refreshing the page in my phone's browser later to see if he'd replied yet, and when I got a reply an hour or two later discovering that refreshing the browser page had re-sent the email, since he replied something along the lines of “I received your email this morning as well but have been in meetings all day and unable to respond till now.” Oops. I've now been working for him for about 18 months, so didn't lose the job over it, but I did feel like an idiot and promptly sent an apology explaining that it was a technical error and I hadn't intentionally sent the email twice. Way to look like a pushy idiot. 😐

I'll take your story to heart and keep it in mind if/when I'm making use of my forwarded address for my job search again. Actually, maybe I should do something like change my LinkedIn to my forwarded address so that I get frequently emails through it and will be alerted more quickly to any issues that arise…hmm…and still make sure I log in to check it “for real” occasionally when job searching. Thanks for the reminder – hopefully your painful lesson will save some of us! And hopefully the job you have now is good enough to make up for the possibility of the missed opportunities.

Not to rub it in, but why not just check the extra email address once a day, especially while job hunting?

Gah, that was an unfortunate oversight!

Do yourself a favor and stop using the old email unless you are going to check it directly. Do you have an iphone? You can have multiple email accounts, if needed.

I don't know much about the forwarding feature, but maybe it expires after a certain amount of time? I don't think that feature is meant to be a permanent solution, but rather a tool for when you start using another email. Maybe do an automatic reply on that email that has your new email in it, just in case.
