Should I Take More Classes?

    Hi all,

I’ve taken the following accounting courses totaling more than 24 units:

    -Accounting 1 & 2
    -Intermediate Accounting 1
    -Cost Accounting 1
-Individual Taxation (plus an H&R Block Income Tax course)
    -Auditing (one class)
    -Accounting Consolidations (one class)

I’ve also taken the following business classes totaling more than 24 units:

    -Econ 1 & 2
    -Business Law 1 & 2
    -Personal Finance
    -Intro to Marketing
    -Business Communications
    -A slew of math courses

Although I’ve surpassed the 24 unit requirement in each category, should I take more? Are there any courses I should take that would help me in preparation for the CPA exam (specifically accounting courses) that I haven’t already taken?

    Thanks!

I would try and take a gov/non profit course. It will help a lot on the exam! Also, make sure you have enough accounting credits. I know in VA introductory accounting courses didn't count towards my 24 accounting credits and it really messed up my cpa schedule.

Awesome, I'll sign up for a gov/non-profit course. I'm seeing possibly intermediate accounting II as another class I should take?

I'll check with the CA board tomorrow. I know they accept all mathematics in the business section, they may not accept the two intro accounting courses though which sucks because they're both 5 units each.

I would definitely take Intermediate II and also Advanced. I am currently studying for FAR and the majority of the concepts are from Intermediate I/II and Advanced Accounting.

Thanks! I'll sign up for those.

Unfortunately the CA board was of no help with regards to whether or not introductory accounting classes count towards the 24. They said I'd have to submit my transcripts to see if they count. If anyone has any experience with this, please let me know if in CA the intro accounting courses count towards the 24.

I took the introductory classes called “Principle of Accounting” from Mission College, and they were counted. I am in CA. If CA still allows people to sit in for the exams without meeting 150 units, you may start studying for the exams. College classes do not really help the exam preparation.

Still the same, the 150 units is for licensure, not for the exam. So it's just the 24 accounting/24 business to sit for the exam.

I have heard from a few people about college classes not being that helpful for exam prep. Seems like intermediate II and gov/non-profit would be all that's left for me to take if I don't start studying now (eager to start). I'll do some more research, thanks Ultra!
