Serving on a board, do you get paid?

This may be a dumb question but do people get paid for serving on a board? say for example a non-profit board.

In fieldwork, certain coworkers have to leave to “attend a board meeting”. My employer is somehow affiliated with or encourages this type of networking but the manual doesn’t say whether they are paid by the board they serve on or whether employer pays their regular wage while they attend board functions. I’m too shy to ask because I feel like I already ask too many questions and feel stupid almost daily being new.

They can be paid, but they can also do it for free. This article says that in NFP it is more common to do it for free: https://nonprofit.about.com/od/nonprofitbasics/f/boardcomp.htm

In almost all cases board members get paid, except as noted above in non-profit. They don't get paid bad either, usually $200k+ and all expenses covered for board meetings. Of course by the time most people get the expertise and reputation to be on a board that is basically their Christmas money.

Whether or not board members are paid and how much depends entirely on the organizations, I worked for a mid sized company that was not publicly traded and the board members got ~$4k quarterly. Non profits *can* pay board members but usually don't.

And you are correct not to ask, whatever arrangements your peers have worked out with your employer is between them. I understand the curiosity but don't just ask straight out.

First of all you need to differentiate between serving on the board of directors of a company and the board of a non-profit.

The company's directors get paid, and usually their compensation is quite substantial. But it seems to me you're asking about a non-profits or voluntary organizations – those are typically unpaid. More so, any serious non-profit (e.g., opera, symphony, museum, university or any other similar establishments) will require from you to either donate a substantial amount of money or raise the same amount for them (for instance, with the help of your employer). Basically, law firm partners and CPA firm partners “buy” seats on those boards to get access to a top-level networking club.

I'm pretty sure your employer was referring to non-profits boards. Serving on a board of directors of a corporation would likely preclude your firm from providing any services to such company due to the conflict of interests, not to mention it would be impossible to get a spot there without a long-standing connection with the company.

I'd also guess those employee's are probably salaried so it's not so much that they're being paid to work exactly 40 hours per week between the hours of 8-5, but are paid to get their jobs done which generally means a minimum of 40 hours per week and they still have to get their work done regardless of whether they were at work from 8-5 or not.
