Hello all! I am a 28 year old practicing tax attorney of two years. I have an accounting background and I have decided to go ahead and take the plunge and sit for the CPA exam. Although it’s not necessary in my line of work, the CPA is a very well respected credential that I have always wanted. Fortunately one of the partners at my firm is a licensed CPA so I will be able to meet the work experience requirement. I am very rusty on my accounting knowledge, but the hope is that my current law practice is similar enough to allow me to pick it up quickly.

There is a good chance that I will be posting here often over the next 6 or 7 months, so I just thought I would introduce myself.

    Hey @LawGuy, good luck!

Just a note (but you might already know) that if you are planning on sitting for any of the parts in the first quarter, the first score release is not until the beginning of August due to the content and format changes that will take effect in April.

Which exam are you planning on taking first? Did you decide what study material to use?

    BEC 9/3/16
    FAR TBD
    REG TBD

Hi @Namstut! I am planning on sitting for FAR first in April, then BEC in May, Audit in July, and REG in August. It's good to know about the format change–I'll try to schedule my April exam so that it does not line up with that.

I am probably going to go with Surgent CPA review because it is much more hands-on. As is probably often the case, my main bottleneck is limited time to study so I need something efficient. Courses like Becker seem to waste a lot of time.

@LawGuy, here is the email I received regarding scheduling.

If you plan to sit for the BEC or REG sections on or after April 1, 2017, the earliest you may schedule your test date is March 11, 2017. This scheduling hold supports the change to the next version of the BEC and REG Exam sections, which increase from three hours to four hours each as of April 1, 2017.
Seats will be available for candidates who plan to sit for the BEC and REG Exam sections in early April.
IMPORTANT: This announcement does not impact AUD or FAR test scheduling for April 1 and beyond. AUD and FAR scheduling may be done now on the Prometric website.

Yea I wouldn't call you even semi-non conventional. Many people here don't even have an accounting background. A lot of states have liberal requirements for the work experience, you don't have to come from public accounting. Welcome to the fun world of CPA exam studying. Very interested when you're done and passed with a section to hear you compare FAR to the bar exam it's been discussed on here a lot.

    BEC: 85
    REG: 74, 78
    AUD: 86
    FAR: October?
