So you guys are the only ones that know I am taking this exam today. Fiance is at work, son is at school, and I leave in 15 minutes for the Prometric center.

I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t pass my last two exams and I’m tired of having to repeat myself. I told my fiance I cancelled my exam today. I’m not really ready but I already scheduled it so here goes nothing!

Good luck today. But the fact you had to tell a white lie about taking the CPA exam should be a little troubling. It's only the CPA exam…not that big of a deal.

But rooting for you to pass!

Totally understand! After I got a 71 on BEC (and several other fails) and had to tell everyone I didn't pass, I decided to not tell anyone when I'm taking the exam except my friend who's also going through the exams. Good luck!

I'm tired of operating in fear and mediocrity. It's time to try. It's time to do. It's time to go.

Best of luck on the exam but I wouldn't lie to my fiance about something so trivial. It's one of the most difficult exams out there, I have gone into each exam so far prepared for the possibility that I may fail and have to retake it. If people are disappointed in your results and continue to express that disappointment, just don't associate yourself with those people. You're working your ass off and many people don't know what you go through when taking these exams, so often times their complete lack of understanding is because the only thing they can relate CPA exams to is tests they took in college or high school. My girlfriend is occasionally upset that I can't spend time with her, but ultimately understands that once these exams are over, we will see each other far more. I would hope your significant other is just as understanding.

I have not told anyone besides my family that I am taking exams. But the point here is that it's not that my friends and coworkers are not supportive. They are very supportive and they believe in me; so I chose to not say anything because I would not want to let anyone down. So this is quiet the opposite from the previous comment – there would be no judgements if I didn't pass.

This is how relationship breakup between accountants happens when one lies to the other about taking or not taking the exams. The end result is boring Dr. Phil to death on his own show. Now you are charged with murder : D

I feel you – literally in the same position. I had a really rough start so I stopped telling people when I was taking exams or even passing them – Including my Partner! Did the exact same this morning. My alarm went off, he tried to reach over for a snuggle and I ninja-wriggled my way out of there and into the cold dreary morning.

I have passed every exam (KNOCKING ON WOOD AND EVERY OTHER SURFACE AHHHH) since I started doing this. Telling people when I was taking an exam, and then them asking if I passed, or how studying was going, or when my next test was or pointing out how long I had been studying was really an extra layer of pressure that ultimately messed me up a bunch. I started to try and pass for them instead of me, and that did me no favors!

My partner occasionally gets mildly upset, but I remind him that it's not about his feelings and it's about me getting my CPA. I don't feel bad about the “lies” and neither should anyone else in this position. You do you, people!

On that note, I HOPE YOU PASSED!!!!!

@Tardis_Wobble Not telling people is fine. I don't think anyone is saying that keeping your exam results/dates to yourself = lying. OP said she told her fiance that she cancelled her test though when that isn't the case at all, I think that's the thing people are taking issue with.

I hate telling people that I'm taking the exam, because they always ask did you pass and I have to say I don't know.
Also failing just makes it double depressing. Like you have to relive the moment you failed by telling others.

    REG: 75

@skynet I think you are my favorite person on here.

Just a little back story, I was originally going to cancel the exam because I didn't feel prepared. He and I discussed it and he said he would support me no matter what. But after sleeping on it and some encouragement from this forum I decided to take it anyway. But I didn't tell my fiance I had changed my mind.

He is SUPER supportive and is behind me no matter what. After my last AUD exam he was so sure I had passed, when I told him I failed, he was just as heratbroken as I was. I have the same sort of issue with my mom, so I've decided to not tell them exactly when I take it. If I pass, I'll let a few select people know.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! Love this place. 🙂
