Retake Advise…. AUD/REG

As some of us, today I woke up to the not so good news that I failed my first CPA Exam AUD (63%). I took the exam on 2/22 and after taking it I immediately started to study for REG. I actually was already registered to take REG on 4/18. Right now I’m at Ch. 3 (of 8) from Becker REG course. Since the news from this morning I have been beating my head on how to approach this situation:

    A) Should I keep studying for REG and then take AUD by the end of the test window, or

    B) should I stop studying REG and take AUD at the first week of April and take REG at the end of May

From the above, what would be your approach?

If I choose option B, is 3 weeks enough study time for a retake?

What strategy do you recommend regarding studying again for AUD?

Should I compliment Becker material with something else?

Just to be cautious I changed my REG test from 4/18 to 5/26 (latest date available). I work full time and I stayed at my office after work and studied about 3 hrs 4 or 5 days and studied 6 to 8 hrs between Saturday and Sunday. The week before the exam I only did progress test of 100 MCQs and was averaging between 75% and 79%. I actually didn’t take a lot of notes :/

I will appreciate any advise you could provide about the above or any other thing you would like to say.

    Thanks! 🙂

PS… sorry for the long post

I recommend to stick with REG, just because I feel like audit will come back to you easier than R1-3 will. If you were to restart REG after an audit retest, you'd have to start over with R1.

Also, once you start studying for audit again, even though some time has passed, when you go over some things and have no recollection of ever seeing that material before….you'll know where your shortfalls were! I would think 3 weeks would be enough for an audit retake. I'd recommend skipping watching the videos for a 2nd time though. Skim each chapter section individually, then pound out ALL of the homework MCQs in that section again, and repeat! I found that with audit, more than any other exam, the MCQs were SO SO SO helpful. I'd have no idea what I was reading, go into MCQs still having no idea what I was doing, and then halfway though after looking up and reviewing wrong answers, I'd finally start understanding. Its also important to do progress tests each time you finish a chapter to keep past chapters fresh. They can't cover EVERYTHING, but its better to review something than nothing.

I was in the same situation as you at the end of last quarter, but with BEC instead of REG. I would recommend sticking with AUD while its fresh, especially if your not taking REG until the end of May. Another month of studying is more than enough time to get you up to a passing score. I recommend picking up NINJA MCQs, it helped me pass AUD and BEC. However, with this approach, of course you have to realize that 5 or 6 weeks is going to be a hell of a cram for REG. I took my AUD retake on Jan 12 and BEC on Feb 29. My top concern was getting AUD out of the way and kind of viewed BEC as a “shot in the dark” but still hit the books hard with the time that I had. Well, I got my BEC score today and it was not impossible to pass with just 5-6 weeks of studying. Granted, REG has more material than BEC, I still think its possible to pull it off.

But after writing this, I now realize from you signature that AUD was your first exam. So you're not on the clock yet since you havent passed one, which means you probably don't even need to try to cram to exams in one testing window. In that case, it probably doesn't matter whether you stick with either/or. But I recommend sticking to one at a time, just my two cents. Good luck to you!

Could you share us what material you use? I failed AUD and try to do all MCQs again. Hope I can be familiar with it.

I used Becker + NINJA notes. Honestly, I feel like they weren't that great for audit. I do highly recommend them for BEC though!

@jayjpr stick with Audit, 3 weeks away may not be enough for Audit; it might wiser to reschedule. It took me 5 trials to pass this exam. For study tips, you can keep doing Ninja MCQ's but you must read all explanations and read up on pronouncements to help you understand the underlying principles.

Reg is a beast (even bigger than FAR IMO), you won't have enough time to sit for that exam unless you move it little bit forward.

Don't move on to another section until you pass it. Stick with Audit. I studied for 3 weeks for my Audit retake with only ninja MCQs. I used Becker for the first take.

    AUD: Pass (July 2015)
    BEC: Pass (Nov 2015)
    REG: Pass (Feb 2016)
    FAR: Pass (June 2016)
