Reschedule or Swing for the Fences???

Hello all my fellow traveler’s. This is my first thread topic and I’m sure this topic has been posted before. So here goes!

My first REG attempt is scheduled for this Friday. I’ve passed BEC (studied for a little over 2 months) and failed AUD twice (studied for two months: 63; restudied for 1 month: 71). I have been studying hard for REG the past 6 weeks and haven’t even hit the review stage yet. I’ve been doing MCQ’s non-stop for almost 3 weeks but just got through all of them last week. Then I started on the SIMS and I’m only about half-way through them.

Needless to say, I do not feel prepared at all for this exam. I walked into BEC having no idea what to expect and felt numb afterward. I knew deep down I wasn’t prepared for AUD the first time but thought I could wing it; my second attempt I felt way more prepared and left feeling like I had no idea what was going on during the exam.

I am getting married the second week of April. My fiance and I are having a private ceremony in Belize while we are on our honeymoon, sort of a combo thing. Meanwhile, my bacherlorette party is in Vegas next weekend and then his bachelor party is the following weekend, then I have to spend the week before the trip getting ready. Since we are essentially eloping WITHOUT any friends or family, we are having a reception in May.

All that being said, my schedule is jam packed, but only in “short” bursts. So here is my dilemma…

A.) Take REG on Friday being completely unprepared (my own opinion, no scientific research to back that up) and see what the results are

    OR

B.) Reschedule for the end of May and keep plugging away til then. I can do some “light” studying between now and when I get married and then hit it hard again after I get back. This will give me more time to hit MCQ’s and all the SIMS a few more times. Plus more NINJA audio and notes.

Neither of these choices are ideal but neither was failing AUD twice.

I value all (well, most haha!) of you opinions and I’m sure many of you have been in a similar situation. I know life comes fast and we only have a small passing window.

Whatever you guys think, just let it fly. However, if you want to dog me for not giving myself enough time to study or chastise me for not planning well enough, please refrain from posting. I’d rather have constructive advice and not criticism.

    Thanks everyone and happy studying!

Any suggestions? Really need some fellow CPA exam taker insight.

If i was in your position, I would just take the test. The cons: you may need to pay more money and you will spend 3.5 hours taking this test. The pros: you have a chance to pass, will see your strengths/weakness, and get a feel for what the AICPA can test you on.

If you're not worried about spending the money or expect to pass, I would say take the test. Good luck and congrats on the wedding and honeymoon, OP!

If the theory in the above link is right, we might as well take the very last plunge before the new CPA format.

Thanks guys for your input. I didn't cancel my exam for Friday. Going to review the Ninja Notes tonight and tomorrow and try some MCQ Progress tests.

I never even got a chance to do the Ninja MCQ.

I told my fiance I was cancelling my exam, I'm not going to tell him I plan on taking it. I hate putting him through the disappointment of seeing me fail, it's really hard on him to watch me be so depressed.

I mean, what's the worst that could happen?! 🙂

I agree with what's been said above. Give it a shot. Go in guns blazing and see what happens when you get your score. It's better to take it now when you'll get your score in a couple of weeks than to take it later and get your score in a couple of months. Being married/engaged while taking this dreadful exam can be hard. Your SO can feel neglected and emotionally invested in you and consequently the exam. I wish I could have passed Audit and Reg when I first took them. I have to retake audit in May and I'm retaking reg this Friday. My wife has been a champ through it all. It's important to just remind your SO at every chance you get that you love them and that you're doing your best. The celebration when you rock all for sections whenever that happens will be all the more awesome.

Thanks @Bluetoothray. 🙂 I also have 2 kids; my teenage son is a little more understanding but my 5 year old doesn't quite get it. She knows what it means when I'm studying and will sometimes grab an old keyboard and sit on the bed so she can “study”, too. But I know my SO gets frustrated having to handle everything all the time.

We had a conversation last night (I'm sure he's sick of having these!) and he told me that after the wedding we may need to change up our schedule again and get more serious about me having good quality study time. I know he'll support me if I come up with a good plan and stick to it but it's going to be difficult to make certain sacrifices.
