Practice SIMS vs Actual Exam SIMS

I just took FAR on 12/10 and hope it will be the last test I need to take. Just yesterday I realized I may have made a huge mistake and was wondering if anyone had done something similar.

I use CPAexcel and on their practice simulations, any blank spaces would need to be filled. So for journal entries, any blank spaces in the account column I would put ‘N/A or No entry needed’. For empty debits/credits I would put an ‘N/A or 0’.

On the actual exam it specifically told me I may not need to use all rows available. So if asked for a journal entry and they gave me room for 5 entries, but I only needed 2, I would put ‘No Entry Needed’ in the 3rd slot and move to the next question.

    Example:

    Accounts Receivable xx
    Sales xx
    No Entry Needed

After I put the ‘No entry needed’ once, it wasn’t available anymore, hence me not filling the other blank spaces.

I am realizing that this entry is probably only required if there really was no J/E needed whatsover. I am hoping when the computer grades this, it doesn’t read the No Entry Needed and automatically mark the whole question incorrect.

Anyone run into this problem or something similar? I have just been programmed to answer these in this fashion after doing over 300 sims in the past couple months.

Honestly, it all depends on how the person who is grading your simulations interprets your answers. If it were me, I may be a little confused when you put an entry and then put “no entry needed”, but the fact of the matter is that you gave an entry. If your entry is correct, I doubt that they will count it against you.

I know that most of the exam is graded by a computer, but I do believe that many of the simulations are reviewed for partial credit by a real person.

You know, now that I think about it I came across the same exact situation and thought there was a problem with the sim. Pretty sure you were supposed to leave it blank. If they're graded like how the practice sims are, you got 4/5 (assuming it was a 2-line entry), so that should be a little reassuring.

I too have greatly wondered about this… I didn't figure that “no entry needed” was necessary for a question that does need an entry, even if that entry doesn't fill all the available spaces; however, I have wondered if you are supposed to put zeros in the debit/credit cells that don't have the entry numbers in them. Like this:

    account 1 xxx.xx 0
    account 2 0 xxx.xx

That's what Ninja SIMs require, but there aren't explicit instructions about that on the actual test.
