Potential Employer Asking for Current Paystub?

Is that normal? That has never happened to me before. I didn’t lie about my current compensation level, but, it doesn’t feel right. I’m sure they are allowed to ask but it feels like an invasion of privacy.

    now.

Additionally, I feel like they are taking away any negotiation leverage I may have. I feel like I should be compensated based on the market, my skills and experience, and the level of work they are asking me to do. Certainly not on what I make right now.

Any thoughts. What would you do?

I've lied about current salary, so I understand why they would ask. I'm guessing a lot of people in the industry probably do that in hopes of getting more. Since you didn't lie, I would just provide it. Then explain to them exactly what you just said.

Have you already told them what your salary expectations are, and are you desperate for a job? Personally I'd thank them for x their time and move on.

It’s normal. I’ve been asked to show proof of previous compensation- especially for positions over $100k. But, I would not show unless compensation (for the new position) has been determined.

It's for a fortune 500. Believe the range is around 100k.

@Nessie, fantastic suggestion. I think that's what I'll do. Thank you

is there anything on your stub that current employer would object to having disclosed? compensation pkgs make employers more competitive. perhaps they really want to see what they are up against in the labor market.

This is negotiation, not discovery. As you point out, providing proof of compensation gives them leverage to offer you less. It also puts you in a one-down position. It's also none of their business.

MC, I had it happen to me once. A company flew me into Tempe, Arizona for a job interview. I was making a pretty good income (almost all commission) at the time and I wanted them to pay me a salary that was the same or more than the commission. So I had to prove what I made. I didn’t find it insulting or intrusive. I slightly exaggerated what I made, but then saved myself by saying that year over year I am making 30% more, so what I said was accurate with a growing clientel.

Good luck, it’s normal in the good ole US of A 🙂
