I had a few questions about the ethics test:

First of all, on the AICPA website it doesn’t seem like you can take the ethics exam without purchasing a $150 study guide. Is there any way to work around this?

Second, is it possible to pass the ethics test without studying, simply by looking up the information you need in the PDF while you do it?

is the exam available entirely online? if so, does it cost extra?
what is the time limit for this test?

    1) You can become a member for free for the first year and pay $125.

    2) Heck yes. That's what the majority of people do.

    3) In CA, as I understand it, doing it online is for the first 6 times. After that, they require you to do paper. There is no time limit.

I believe it depends on the state. For California, I had to purchase the ethics course through Calcpa.org. It comes with the study materials ( a 300+ page document) and exam. The exam was not timed and I could take it at any time at the comfort of my own home. It was open book and I used a combination of the index at the back of the pdf and the find function. I did not have to take in one sitting as each answer was saved as I moved along the exam and I could jump back into it at any time.

California gives you three tries to pass the 50 question exam with a 90%. If you expense the first three tries, then you would have to call and ask for three more. If you fail the first six, you have to pay for another set. Again this is for California. Each state has somewhat different requirements when it comes to the ethics exam.

    I hope that helped.
