Hi All! I haven’t been on in a while, hard to believe I passed the CPA exam almost 3 years ago…

I have a question for all you seasoned tax folks. A little background before I start.

I have absolutely zero functional tax experience other than doing my own every year for the last few years. I’m looking to make a transition to part time work and thought that due to the seasonality of the tax profession, tax would be my best option.

Here’s the question: What sort of training (be it a class or classes, CPE, or anything else) would be worth while to take? I’m trying to show prospective employers that I’m serious about learning about taxes and being able to contribute almost right away.

I’ve been pretty malleable in my career thus far so I don’t think I’d have too much trouble picking it up, but I’d definitely want to learn under someone who has been doing it for a while instead of just throwing out my own shingle and starting my own shop.

    Thank you for your help/input!!

If you have a flexible timeline, think about VITA next season. If you need experience fast, consider applying for an H&R Block/Jackson Hewitt type job part-time. I'm not a fan of chain tax prep firms, but you would be able to get the exposure you need to start building your resume. And, of course, any CPE courses you can get ahold of would certainly help – start with the basics and work your way up from there. It's not hand-on training, but will familiarize you with the tax code.

Those are just a couple of quick suggestions – someone else might (probably) have better ones. 🙂

I did VITA for three years. I learned more from that program than I did in Tax 1 & 2 in college. There are also tax programs that you can do as mentioned above.

    BEC-July 2016
    REG-August 2016
    FAR-October 2016
    AUD-Nov/Dec 2016
