NY not accepting UNA credits??

So I just got an email from NASBA after I requested they send my educational info to NYS to complete my initial licensing. They informed me the 2 courses I took at University of Northern Alabama (UNA) would not count toward my acct credits…

The NYS website now has a blurb at the bottom of the ed requirements about prep courses and specifically mentions the CPAexcel courses.

Did this change recently? I registered for the courses in May 2015. If this “decree” was not made yet do you think I can argue that I signed up for the courses before they were explicitly excluded?

I will spare everyone from editorializing my post but obviously I am furious and frustrated.

For what it's worth, I doubt you can argue it based on the fact that you signed up for them prior to the change in the rules. Probably their answer will be that they are only liable to accept credits based on their rules at the time you submit the credits to them. That's why generally when people call the state board, they won't say “We'll accept ACCT427 from Bob Sue College”, but just “We currently accept upper-level credit from regionally accredited colleges”, or something like that, because they reserve the right to change their rules at any time and just because ACCT427 at Bob Sue College is current upper-level and accredited doesn't mean it will be tomorrow. It sucks, but that's the way it usually works.

So…if I was in your spot, I'd probably try to protest it, and explain that you began taking the courses in May 2015 and weren't aware of the rule at that time (or if you can find in the board minutes when it was changed, maybe you can confirm it wasn't made as of that time), and ask for an exception. However, I expect the answer will be that the rules when you applied for license – today – are the rules you have to meet. I hope I end up being wrong though! 🙁

I got the same rejection yesterday from the NY NASBA. I took two online classes with UNA to fulfill the requirement of sitting for the exam. The school just told me the same result. Any suggestion of how to deal with this? It really took so long to get those credits. I'm kind of pissed of wasting so much time and just be told they changed their policy..?!

    Thanks
