    Good morning:

I applied for the NY CPA exam (to sit for the exam) on December 27, 2017. On January 19, 2018 I was told over the phone that they had received my final transcript, and they further said that the web page would be updated “soon” to reflect that. I have two questions. First, do I have the credentials to sit for the CPA exam for NY.

Graduated college in 2008 and law school in 2011. I have 32 credits of accounting credits. for NY State, i have the following:
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING AND REPORTING: (must be at four year university) Intermediate Accounting I & II + Advanced Accounting at Queens college
COST OR MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING (can be at Community college): Cost Accounting at Queens College (also management accounting at Suffolk Community College)
TAXATION: (can be at Community college): Federal Income taxation at Suffolk Community College
AUDITING: (must be at 4 year university) Auditing at Queens College.

Second, when is the expected turnaround time to get a decision on my application if they have everything?

I signed up for Queens College taxation (just in case I get rejected by being able to take the CPA exam). I will need to drop the class by Thursday, though I can re-add it as late as February 4, 2018. Will I have a decision prior to February 4, 2018? What do you think the chances are of that?

** Just want to note that in applying, I'm 99% sure I have the requirements, but just want an opinion just in case. The turnaruond time is what I'm much more interested in finding out.

NYS CPA board is very overwhelmed and incredibly slow right now.
Different situation from yours, but I applied in April 2017 under the 15 year pathway and I did not get approval until the end of August.
It might be in your best interest to use the NASBA education evaluation service for a fee.
The turn around might be faster.

To answer your question. I am not sure how long education evaluation takes but I would assume at least 6 weeks with the NYS board.
It depends if the same people evaluating education are also working on reviewing license applications.

I applied a few years ago, but it was a relatively quick turnaround once they received my transcripts. I don’t think it was more than a couple weeks. As long as you have the 150 credits and the required amount of accounting credits you should be ok.

Try emailing Tomu Itoh at titoh@nasba.org. Explain what you just posted to him and he’ll let you know if it’s enough.

I took most of my accounting credits at Queens College when I went back to school. Pretty good program for the money.

I applied in August and received an acceptance like 2-3 weeks later. I know it wasn't longer than month wait

Congrats, and just as a note you'll need 1 more credit hour of accounting for licensing, but you can take anything i.e. payroll accounting

Wow, so Tomu Itoh is the primary liason for NY candidates, I always thought there would be more but I've seen his name pop up on here many times (and is the one who updated me on the process), and he has a very quick response rate, Tomu's the man.

I did have one State Board liason/advisor email me back stating “I can't confirm anything with you unless you're sitting in front of me in my office with the actual official transcripts on my desk”. She also told me that I “clearly wasn't understanding the requirements and why I didn't meet them”, and of course a couple of days later without any extra work I receieved my eligibility notice.
