Need To Buy My Software Today – Change Of Heart

Sooooooo…. I originally was contemplating going with Becker or Roger. I previously had a thread asking comparisons between the two. It’s so nice to have a place to come and ask people who have used both programs their opinions, even though a lot of people probably find these threads annoying :). Anyway I was pretty sure I was going to go with Roger, but than I got my NTS and started researching again out of habit. My GOAL is to buy a software this weekend. I’m pretty confident that I could probably pass with any software (all about the effort put in), but I want the best available tools to aid me. I’m taking FAR first and I’m scheduling in the beginning of July. I just wanted some last minute opinions on CPA review software, as I’m interested in CPAExcel now too.

How I studied best in college:

    – I always paid attention in class. My favorite professors were ones who provided examples and didn’t just read PP slides.

    – When it came to studying for exams, I always would always read the covered chapters multiple times and pound practice MCQ into my head. I would always do really well doing this.

Also – from anyone’s experience, is it better just to buy the review by the section even though it costs a little more? This way if it doesn’t work out. it’s less of a loss. Also I will be reimbursed for this eventually (assuming I pass).

    Thanks in advance Ninjas 🙂

Will, I study in a similar way to you. I have watched some Roger videos on line, and I will admit he is an enthusiastic teacher, but because Becker is DeVry, they are pretty good at lectures, notes and MCQs. I suggest you buy one section of Becker. Don’t get sucked into buying all at once, in case you don’t like it or run out of time. I took the online version and when I did not understand something, I just replayed it.

Keep in mind, *a lot* of the learning will come from looking at the MCQs and why an answer is correct or incorrect. This stuff will not even be covered in the lectures. I think if you are super motivated either one will get you a pass, but test out one subject at a time. If you don’t like it, go with the other company for the next topic.

I haven’t started my NINJA MCQs questions yet, but supplementing with another company is a very good way to cover everything you will have to know.

    Good luck!

Paid full price for Roger myself. Never regret for one second. I'd say Roger course is more exam focus than Becker.

I would also suggest you to get Ninja MCQ for supplement. Can't beat $47 for one section.

I've been using CPAexcel and have passed my first three parts on my first attempt. I also added Ninja MCQs for BEC and FAR. I only watched the lectures in CPAexcel for my first exam (AUD), and never watched any more after that, because I found that I mostly zoned out and it wasn't the most efficient use of my study time. But they are probably helpful if you have areas that you are struggling with. Another thing I didn't use of the CPAexcel material was the flashcards. I opened one box (for AUD), but the other three boxes I never even took the plastic off. The rest of the CPAexcel material I found to be helpful and honestly it did its job. I definitely think adding the Ninja MCQs is important too, as it helps you learn some of the material in a different way. I don't consider myself particularly good at accounting, yet using CPAexcel and Ninja MCQs has helped me pass the exams. Honestly, though, I think whatever study material you go with, it all depends on you putting in the time and effort. I'm sure any and all of them can work, so I would just choose whichever you feel the most comfortable with. Best of luck to you as you begin your journey!

    @ASUalum

Did you just get the basic package for CPAExcel?

I'm sort of leaning toward CPAExcel now…I heard Roger goes over a lot of things that isn't necessary and also I have a hard time reading his hand writing :p. I haven't heard any bad things about Becker, but the price does turn me off… I won't be reimbursed for a while down the road so it does matter.

No, I think I got the most expensive package…I ended up getting like 25% off or something because I was a recent college grad (just finished up my masters before I bought it). Basically I wanted it because I wanted actual books to use since I'm old school and don't like using just digital books. I think some of the less expensive packages didn't include that? Whatever package you get, just make sure you get the online test bank with it. I think you can just add that separately too if it's not a part of the package already. As I said before, the flashcards were useless, so if there's a package without those, that's what I'd get. Also, the package I got included the “focus notes”…also not something entirely necessary, but somewhat helpful for a quick review. Hope that helps!

Cpaexcel is a good package, I bought it and attempted to use it, but I got restless. I wanted to get to the point of the information so I kinda put it a way to try yeager (failed reg and far) so I went back to cpaexcel, I got restless again, so I kinda put it a away again to try ninja products, I think cpaexcel is good and simple, but you must make time to go through the lessons. The good thing is you can decide, read the power points, watch the lectures, do the questions, read the flash cards or all of the above. But you must make the time and not get restless like I did because the lessons are so many and can be tedious. I do use it just to jump start study but when I get restless, I put it away and do ninja mcq's. Facing reg and far again…..looking for success.

Can you add the online test bank by part? I'm guessing you probably can.

Yes you can, there is also questions within each section. There are plenty of questions. I got the ninja test bank since the wiley test bank is similar to the questions within the section. I like the ninja test bank because it is adaptive,

They are having a 20% off sale for the platinum course too. Does CPAExcel always have these deals going on? It expires tomorrow though… Man I preferred to buy them in sections just in case I wanted to switch reviews later but this is a great deal… hmm..

Will, yes they almost always have this deal going on. And I sit in July as well. I'm using CPAexcel silver package right now and I use the book and mcq's most of the times. Good luck to you!

Yeah I'm leaning toward CPAExcel. It seems just buying the platinum package all at once with the 20% discount going on right now is the cheapest route.

Ninjas in your experience is it better to buy the review as a package or parts (just in case that review doesn't work out)?

The platinum package is $1836 right now for all 4 parts. That's about the same price as buying the lowest cost package + the test banks.

I would just go ahead and buy the package. The bottom line is it works if you're willing to put in the time. While you may not use all of the material, you will learn after studying for your first exam what works best for you. I still suggest adding Ninja MCQs to help during the last few weeks leading up to each exam, but those are inexpensive and you can purchase them one at a time along the way. I was hesitant to spend that much all at once too (like you, I also had to pay for it on my own), but I knew I wasn't going to spend that much and then not somehow make it work. CPAexcel helps keep you on a timeline and breaks things down into manageable pieces, which is what I really liked. If you follow the plan, you will be able to pass. Stop thinking so much about it and just do it already…you're just wasting valuable study time the longer you wait! 😉
