Hey guys,

Now that I’ve passed my CPA exams, I’m getting ready to apply to some firms in the Fall (typically when they recruit) and need some ideas on what to put on my resume to make it fit on one full page.

Apart from the usual job experience, education, etc. that you put on your resume, I’m wondering what is reasonable to put on a resume in regards to volunteer work/donating. I’ve been out of school for 3 years now so I don’t think I can really put any athletic achievements on there anymore haha so I need some advice.

There are some charities I would like to donate to especially local ones asking for masks, hand sanitizer, etc. for COVID but I don’t know if that’s appropriate to put on or if it should only be volunteer work.

It should be only volunteer work and should not disclose your religious affiliation or political leanings.
Do you have a skills section that lists all the wonderful things you can do? Excel, OfficeSuite, SQL, US GAAP, etc? Additional courses and training?
A line at the bottom that says REFERENCES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST
Include any internships, extracurricular activities that are relevant.
Professional memberships. You should join your state cpa society as an unlicensed member and start participating in workgroups.

I usually combine my volunteer / job experience / internship into one field just call “experience”, and only if they are long term and relevant to the job. If they are not, don't bother putting it on. I think people read resume from top to bottom so everything that's “IMPORTANT” need to be in one place and not two places.

I never disclose where I donate or my habit, unless they are relevant. If they do, they can be on the cover letter or as a bonus on the interview.

In NY a lot of people don't write reference upon request but will be mention on the interview, which then you should have it ready and hand over.

Put 5 points for every job. If you don't have enough jobs, put in the next internship / volunteer experience to show that you have “progress to a high level”.

I will only consider putting course name if it's a special course that people don't see regular accounting program. I expect they ask for your transcript during the interview.

Let's be honest, people spent 30 seconds or less to reading your resume. They read it when you introduce yourself on the interview, not before. Write only the important stuff and not everything.
