Hopefully someone has been in my shoes and can give me some guidance. Background about me, I graduated from a well known accounting school in NYC, but I couldn’t get into public accounting because I didn’t have experience which resulted from having two jobs paying for school which prevented interning. I got a job for one year managing payroll, and now I’m an assistant controller at a big corporation for the past two years. I got my cpa, and my current job is a dead end because the current controller isn’t going anywhere for a long time. My question is should I go into public? Is it too late? Any advice is appreciated, hopefully someone has been in my shoes can share some wisdom. I’m so lost and It’s hard working in an environment knowing that advancement is not possible.

Does your previous college have a career development center that you can find jobs through? What are your hours like in private? Do you like the work life balance? Because your not going to find it in public.

Hi mhueycpa, The college does but I'm not concerned about actually finding a job, rather is public worth it after being out of school for three years. Also my hours are 9-6 Monday Thursday, and 9-2 on Fridays. I have a problem with a not being able to move up, I mean this place gives very generous raises, but I can't imagine three years with no advancement. Am I limiting myself by not going into public?

Based on what you're describing it sounds like you have a pretty good gig there with limited hours (compared to public) and generous raises. However, I can definitely understand that it would be frustrating knowing you aren't getting promoted anytime soon. Just understand that going into public will probably land you at an entry level position (unless you can find a job in Outsource services) since you don't have tax or audit experience which will probably lead to a fairly sizable pay cut.
