I’ve been making $50k since starting in real estate industry. Boss had HR make an agreement that once I pass I’ll see more money. I passed. What do you think is fair for me to shoot for when I sit down with HR?

Our value does not come from our skills and abilities, as good as they may be; it does not come from our GPA, our job, a promotion from that job to a better job, our success on the CPA exam, or anything of the like; but our value comes from the fact that we have a Creator who loves us, cares for us, and desires to help us navigate the rough waters of this life in a way that provides security, hope, and true, everlasting joy while we anticipate the life to come, with Him.

Hi Shanek – how often do y'all do reviews? If your review is coming soon, I would wait until then to bring it up. If not, I would schedule a one on one and just ask to revisit the agreement that he made, since you have passed your exams. I think this is an easier conversation to have, since your boss has already opened the door. Be sure though when you do meet, that you come prepared with how much you think you should be paid now that you have your CPA. Good luck and congrats for passing your exams!

Does your CPA license have specific value to the company? If so, and you can quantify that economic benefit, it's easy to argue for some percentage of that increased value.

On the other hand, if there is no specific benefit to them, it's hard to say what's fair unless they promised a specific amount. If you haven't received a raise yet, I would push for a 10% increase and a title bump. Unless there' s some other factors that make me think more than 10% is realistic.
