NASBA Holdup – 120 vs. 150 credits

anybody else had this experience? I passed the last test in March. Sent in my application to NY and hadn’t heard anything for a few weeks. So I contacted them and they told me they hadn’t received anything from NASBA showing I’d received credit for passing the exams. Went to NASBA and they told me I hadn’t fulfilled the 150 credits and I was sitting for the exam under the 120 credit rule. If I remember correctly to sit under the 120 credits you needed to have classes in Cost, Tax, Auditing and Business Law in order to be able to sit. The issue I run into is that my credits for 3 of the 4 are on one transcript and the last is on another from my MBA and together I have almost 200 credits! So I don’t know how I could be sitting under the 120 credits unless they had both transcripts. And if they have both transcripts, I don’t know how I don’t meet the 150 credits :-s . They couldn’t give me any clarification regarding this either.

I had new transcripts sent into NASBA, but wondering if anybody else has run into this issue and if so, how long it took to clear up? I’m coming up on another few weeks since the transcripts were sent to them. Frustrating, given how hard we work to pass this exam and then hit a delay like this and you can’t do anything to expedite it.

This is weird…I thought that if you don't have 150 credits, you can't even sit, so maybe they have misplaced one of the transcripts somewhere? I would just try to get in touch with a live person and sort it out…

I believe the credit rule is different in each state. Some people (if I remember correct) can sit before their 150 others, like Indiana, you must have 150 before you can sit.

I had a funny experience with my credit verification process. Well it's funny now, at the time I was extremely annoyed. I turned in my transcript, a week or so later I get an email saying I would be unable to sit due to not having enough credits. They said I had 149–I freaked out immediately, pulled my transcript, totaled it up to 151 and called them back. Sure enough the lady that I got was the one who totaled it up. She proceeds to tell me I don't have enough and was trying to get off the phone. I tell her to recount and I would stay on the line while she did. She was like, yeah I miscounted I will resend you a verification letter..as if it wasn't a big deal at all. I couldn't help but wonder why there wasn't a better method for assuring there counts were correct. I mean, if I wasn't 100% set on getting my CPA that alone could have been a good excuse for me not to proceed. I thought it was pretty ridiculous to say the least.

I had a strange experience when I first applied. I had 165 hours total but was told that the school I got the first 30 hours from was not accredited at the time I went there. It's a fairly respected state university but was being evaluated for re-accreditation at the time. So, I only had 135 semester hours from accredited universities and had to go back and get another 15 semester hours before I could sit. In Louisiana you have to get the 150 semester hours before you can take the exam.

Ok, so I'm not the only one that's had to run the gauntlet. As an FYI, I sat for the exam in NY because CT's were even more of a pain in the butt. 33 credits in Accounting specific classes alone, nevermind the 150 total. I think I wound up with 27 when all said in done. Wonder if they'd take CPE credits as an equivalent.

Yes I have run into a similar issue. Fortunately I was able to speak with someone from the licensing unit by phone who was more forthcoming. Apparently my university had submitted instructions to the Board that my undergraduate coursework should translate as 3 semester hours per class instead of 4. This set my school apart from virtually every other one in the US. However, as it turns out they did switch it to 4 back in 2014. I was asked to provide a notice from the Registrar's office saying this was intended to be applied retroactively, I requested it, and after some prodding, they finally did. I have since received final approval from the Board and sent in my check for the license itself, so I think I may finally be done. This issue has created a 2-3 weeks delay.
