I am in Florida, and I am looking to get my masters in accounting to sit for the CPA in FL as well. I am graduating in July with my Bachelors in Finance from Florida International University.
I was doing some research and just wondering, will the Southern New Hampshire University curriculum fulfill the requirements for what I need to sit for the exam in Florida? SNHU is saying that I will take 17 courses total and I will have my masters. Is this because I didnt have my Bachelors in accounting? The 5 courses it seems I could’ve taken in my undergrad, should I take those at a university here in Florida so that I get in state tuition?

    Thanks

I am a Florida CPA. The additional credit hours is because you don't have a Bachelors in Accounting. I have an employee who has a finance degree and she has to take 10 additional classes before she can begin work on her grad degree. You are the only one who can answer the question about cost difference in tuition. However, if you take the courses at a state university, you may actually be able to qualify for a Bachelors in Accounting and come out with a two 4 year degrees. Also going this route will give you close to half of the additional 30 credits you need for licensure in the state of Florida.

One thing to keep in mind is what kind of accreditation SNHU has. Florida's Board of Accountancy accepts credits from most accredited universities. However SNHU is an online school with no GRE or GMAT requirement which makes me wonder if it has a decent accreditation.

No SNHU is not an online school it's a brick and mortar school with a beautiful campus and dorms that happens to offer online courses, just like most universities. It is accredited both my bachelor's and master's are from SNHU and I got my license from MA no problem. But if you're a FL resident you may find better in state tuition at a state school.

By the way if your bachelor's is in finance did you also look at the master's in accounting and finance (my degree) to see if that would meet your license requirements with less classes?

Well I would still need to do the 30 credits to fulfill the 150. Would going the bachelors in accounting route just be a cheaper route? Like in state tuition and whatever

SNHU is ACBSP accredited as well as NEASC.

Graduate classes at SNHU are just under $1900 per 3 credit course. I'm guessing you could find in state undergrad courses for less than half of that.

I had been working in accounting for years with a high school education. Decided to get my degree but as a single mom with a full time job had to find something online as I wasn't paying a babysitter so I could go to school three nights a week and at the time none of the MA state schools had entire degree programs online. I really liked it so when I graduated I went straight into a master's program. Wasn't until halfway through that the CPA even occurred to me. There was no way I could go to entry level in public and pay my mortgage so I decided to get a non reporting MA license and do the CPA while I was finishing my master's.
