Laid off…now what?

I was informed last week that I am being laid off. I’ll get about 7-8 months of severance pay, but I have to figure out what to do now. I’ve passed BEC and I’ve gotten close on the others. I have AUD and FAR scheduled in February and March, respectively. Here is where things get tricky. I will still have REG to take in the Q2 window, but I won’t get my scores until late June. Should I try to get all three in this window? Is that possible? Any suggestions?

If you are getting 7-8 months severance, just take your time and get this finished! 🙂 I wouldn't try to cram all 3 in one window, when does credit expire on BEC? I would take AUD and FAR as scheduled in Q1, you will know by end of March where you stand on these…If you failed any of the ones you took in Q1, I would re-study for those, instead of jumping to REG…. If you passed them, then study for REG, take it in Q2 and wait for the score at the end of June…

Depending on the severance, and your state, you MIGHT also still qualify for unemployment insurance. I'd check. 7-8 months is EXTREMELY generous.

Personally, I'd study and focus on that if I could, and it sounds like you can.

Holy crap 7-8 months of severance pay? How long did you work for this company? Generally severance is tied to length of service and I've never heard of it being anywhere near that long. Definitely take advantage of that, that's a huge blessing.

I think you should try to get a PHD in accounting while you study for the cpa too. You are at a great place

I've heard of huge separation amounts, but it's usually in feather bedded golden parachutes for executives who fail miserably, and it's usually tied to a contract/damages rather than a severance package.

I think you should focus on the exam, however, I would also look at the job market in the area you live. I got laid off back in 2016 and it took me 6 months to get a job.

    AUD - 73, 72 retake 7/2/2016
    BEC - 8/20/2016
    REG - TBD
    FAR - TBD

I am so ready for this nightmare to be over. Been at this way too long.

@taradb17 Sorry to hear about getting laid off, but congratulations on 7-8 months of severance pay! Wow! I wouldn't take 3 exams in the same window. Take the two you're scheduled for, then take the final one sometime in Q2. If you're studying full time currently, you should be able to get it done. After that, you'll be a CPA and ready to polish up that resume and land a job before your severance pay has ended.
