Hi there I am starting to apply for a new job and will expect to be interviewing within the next several weeks. Likely at a small, local, independently owned firm and probably a couple of local firms that are a little bit larger and more corporatized if you will.

My question: Is a suit with a matching jacket and pants absolutely necessary for a man? Could I get by with just nice pants, blazer, and a tie, or would that be unacceptable/looked down on/etc? Would like to avoid spending more money on a suit and just utilize what I already have if possible but do not want to look like a fool if a suit is pretty much a requirement anywhere. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I think we’re moving into an environment where a suit isn’t always required, but regardless, you can never go wrong with a nice suit. I have always interviewed in suits, they are a good investment as well.

In accountancy, I would always wear a suit to an interview.

Agree with all of the above. Rarely does it feel worse to be under dressed than over dressed for any occasion.
This applies to interviews, as well as everything else in life.

It's 2019, suits are a meme unless you are trying to over compensate. I haven't even seen a partner wearing one outside of LinkedIn. I am a man and only wear a button up and tie and have gotten countless offers from all different types of organizations. If you are accomplished, confident, and a good conversationalist, you are good.

They certainly wear them when they're speaking at conferences.

You might get away with no suit. Buuut, do you want to risk looking like a clown when the interviewers dressed more formal than you? If you are concerning about the price of suit, given you don't have one, goodwill or salvation army has REALLY nice suits that costs only $5.
