If you start working for a CPA firm in summer will you only ever do governmental audits? Or will you do switch back and forth between governmental and corporate as necessary?

I started in public in the summer. I worked on mainly 401k audits. However, there are other corporate audits with different year-ends. We've had one with a 7/31 Y/E. So depends on the firm and the clients you have.

Like @hasy, I interned in the summer and did primarily EBP audits. But there were financial audits going on as well.

But lets say I get the job. I will be doing corporate audits in the other seasons right? I dont want to be forced to specialize in GNP audits. That is not where I want my career to go.

I can't speak for other firms, and I can only say what I've been told. I will be starting after I graduate in May but I was told when people start, they will do a variety of industries for a year or two. After that they will be able to rank their top 3 industries they want to work in, and if the firm has needs for it they will try to accommodate.

Not to be harsh, but if you think at any point you will be able rank your top industries, you are dreaming…perhaps if you are a high-performing senior or something, but otherwise doubtful.

I'll be sure to tell the manager that told me that, that she's wrong.

Not sure why that's so unbelievable. I didn't say you will work in whatever industry you want. I said if they have a need for somebody in the industry you happen to want to work in, they will try and accommodate you. Ultimately you're working wherever they need you.

yea i am slowly realizing that its really hard to find a place and get assigned to what you want. just get the experience and learn as much as possible, i know at my firm we do about 6-7 non profit audits and related work in the spring and summer which is nice as i like non profit is little different to learn about and better than government work
