I come back to this website after couple of years… Back then i was studying for the cpa.. Which I did thank God.

Long story short this is my story

1- i am cpa from US and Saudi Arabia

2- worked at EY for two years then left for a bank as a manager of reporting, for double salary

3- now started a new job at multinatinal company as a finance manager.

Now the real story comes when one of the big 4 called and offered me to join as a senior auditor with the promise to become a partner in 5 years… While I will be a financial controller next year at my current company.

I always think if I want to be a partner and be the boss of myself… With all the long hours at the big 4…. Or stay at the multinational company and become a controller and eventually a CFO … But become an employee for the rest of my life…

    Your feedback is appreciated

I think it depends on where you are in life. As in children, spouse, future goals, etc. I honestly wouldn't mind being an employee for life if it means more time with my family. I value things like that more than I do money.

Who offered you the job to become partner, doesnt seem realistic to me. Usually you dont get partner until about 10-15 years in public, and you gotta get voted in, its not just a guarantee. I wouldnt waste time with public, they probably are telling you things just to get you on board.

    FAR: 05/29/2016: 76!

Unless they put that partner timeline in your offer letter, I wouldn't bank on it for the reasons mentioned above. Is the partnership in the U.S. or Saudi offices? Maybe things are different in the Saudi offices, but in the U.S. the partner track is not something dictated by tenure.

No one can say do X or Y. If you go the Big 4 route I am certain that if you chose to later you could become a CFO eventually, I am not sure the reverse is true in that you can go from controller or CFO to partner at a Big 4.

However, I strongly agree with acamp. If it is not in writing then it is just suggestive. If you are only going to go to Big 4 to be partner in 5 years then get it in writing. Even starting at senior that doesn't seem like a plausible timeline and becoming partner is usually based, in part, on the revenue you can bring to the company, so …

    Thank you guys

Just to clarify, here in Saudi only certified citizens can sign the audit of the financial… With few qualifed citizens in the market they need me as a partner ASAP. So 5 years because they have no ither option

A couple of folks have already said this but I'll reiterate. That partner in 5 years business is silliness. They are definitely telling you that to get you on board.

You have to think of it this way…how many directors are in the office you'd be joining? My guess is quite a bit. Not to mention all the senior managers and managers above you. Not only that, but public is a young person's game (not saying you're old or anything) but it's super cut throat.

If you can see controller position, I'd sit tight and wait for that to happen.

    Good luck!! Keep us posted.
