I am going to start studying again

    I took a long break from the exam and I want to restart again and this time I want to start with FAR and then REG then AUD then BEC. I won’t be able to take the exam until Jan since I won’t have enough time to study for FAR between now and end of Nov. I was wondering should I buy any 2016 books now and do some basic studying until next year rolls around or should I wait until next year buy all the new materials for the CPA and then study then? I don’t remember much from my FAR studying from earlier this year so I will be starting basically new.

    short question:

    Since I am taking the exam in early 2017 should I buy books now to get some basic ideas or should I wait until 2017 to buy books.

    I'm using Gleim, and if you get the premium package they have an access until you pass guarantee (meaning you won't have to pay any extra and they'll send you new books and keep your online access open). I got a major student discount with Gleim because they partnered with my masters program. I got the premium for around $650 but I believe full price is around $1,400 (which is still on the low end of other premium packages). You may give them a call to see what they can do. The times I've called they've always been more than helpful.

    Also, just a thought – since REG and BEC are changing the most starting in April, it may be a good idea to try to knock one or both of them out before the changes take place rather than starting with FAR.

    Best of luck to you!!

    Hmm, I wonder whichever software you use, you could ask them to just mail you the 2017 materials since you're not planning to take them this year. Also, since you have a good amount of time to study and take BEC and REG, I would just attempt to knock those 2 out. Study for REG over the holidays and take BEC in March.

    I would REALLY take it now before it gets more difficult, aka more sims.

    @Allie530 –

    Great post! Can you please share how you like Gleim? Or if anyone else might be using it, can you please share your thoughts on Gleim? I'm considering it for BEC and am looking to purchase soon.How are the videos, audio, book, and MCQ / SIMs bank? Also, are you following the Gleim study process as they advocate or are you doing a modified version of it? Thanks in advance!

    Well I don't have anything to compare it to, and the only test I've taken I haven't gotten my score yet. So I can't really say how effective it is or compare it to other review systems. But I will say that I like it. It's very detailed and organized, which I like. The books for each section are divided into 20 study units. The study units are divided into sub-units. Each subunit has a corresponding video, which usually isn't very long. Gleim also has one of the biggest tests banks and supposedly the questions are harder than the actual exam (although I didn't necessarily feel that way after FAR but we'll see).

    After some trial and error, I came up with a modified approach to their study process that works pretty well for me. I skip the pre-quiz because to me there's no point in wasting time when I haven't studied that material. I watch a video, read the corresponding subunit, watch the next, read the next, etc. That way I'm mixing it up and not getting bored reading for too long. After I'm done with that, I do the focus questions (30 T/F questions) and a study session (immediate feedback) to hammer in the concepts. Then I take a couple quizzes until a feel pretty good, then do the sims.

    You can also download a PDF of each study unit, and each study unit also has a 1-2 page summary of core concepts that was really helpful as I did my final review. Overall, using Gleim has been a good experience for me.

    Alright I am taking everyone's advice, I am going to do REG then BEC. Now I have to cancel my FAR MCQs before they expire later…
