How to study SIMs?

Hi all! I’m going to, for the first time, devote an entire day solely to studying AUD sims. While I do complete all the sims in CPAExcel…I’ve never studied them beyond that (save for doing a handful of Ninja SIMS for FAR). This means that essentially, I did roughly 100 AUD sims over the course of a month for CPAExcel, and haven’t done any in the three weeks since.

This is my last section, and while I have gotten passing grades despite not doing any SIMS beyond the CPAExcel ones (and despite the fact that I am not convinced one can truly study for SIMS), I want to make sure I leave no stone unturned.

How should I go about doing this? Should I just hammer out as many Ninja SIMs as I can, just like I do with the MCQs? Help!

Having taken AUD twice and passing on the second attempt, I think it's important to practice sims. The fact that you already did over 100 is great, but the sims I got on my exams weren't like any of the practice ones in Ninja or Roger.

You really need a strong understanding of the whole audit process to score well on the sims. Also make sure you know how the ratios affect the financial statements (A/R & inventory turnovers, gross margin percentage, debt to equity, etc). I would also brush up on adjusting entries because you can get a sim on them.

I wouldn't bother practicing research sims. Just know how to navigate the AL and you shouldn't have a problem finding the correct answer. Make sure you leave yourself at least 2 hours so you can try and utilize the AL for non-research sims. I wasn't able to use it for my first exam, but used it for the second one to find a lot of answers for one of them.

    FAR: 75 Roger & Ninja (notes/flashcards/audio/MCQ)
    AUD: 73, 81
    BEC: 71, retake 8/29

@RE2PECT – Thanks! I'll home in on FAR-ish sims (ratios, adjusting entries), avoid the research ones, and then otherwise just hammer them out for several hours. Does this seem sufficient? Do you think I need more than 4-5 hours (not counting study breaks)?

I had a FAR style SIM on my audit exam I just took. I didn't really study SIM's, to me they were just in depth MCQ with drop downs instead of clicking a bubble..

    B – 80
    A – Waiting on grade…
    R – 87
    F – 79

First go at the CPA! Only using Becker
    Reg / Nov 2015 - 87
    Far / Apr 2016 - 79
    Bec / May 2016 - 80
    Aud / Aug 2016

If you already did over 100 sims, then you don't need to do much more. I would keep hammering MCQ's and read over your notes. Good luck, I can't wait till I'm one pass away from being done for good!

    FAR: 75 Roger & Ninja (notes/flashcards/audio/MCQ)
    AUD: 73, 81
    BEC: 71, retake 8/29

i strongly suggest you print out the home pages of the standards and get familiar with the topics. knowing what standards exist, what they include, how they are formatted and the difference between the numbered sections and the A sections will help you navigate faster during the exam. so read a few. the toggling back and forth between the sim and the AL can be tedious amd time consuming so knowing where to find what you are looking for really helps.

    FAR 7/25/15 76!
    AUD 10/30/15 93
    BEC 2/27/16 82
    REG 5/23/16 88!
Ninja Book and MCQ and the forum - all the way!!!
and a little thing i like to call, time and effort!
if you want things to change, you have to do something different

I just do all the Ninja sims. Takes about 2 days of study. They kind of check your understanding of the material in a different way than MCQs. And they are less tiring than doing 200 sims in one day. Nice way to study the last few days before the exam.

The adjusting entries in the Ninja and Wiley sims don't seem all that hard but who knows how bad the real ones are on the exam. I have the most trouble with understanding those ratios and guessing what caused the ratio to increase or decrease. Those are real mind fucks.

Apparently there is an “Advanced Search” in the AL for AUD. Too bad Wiley and Ninja don't have it. You need Windows to use the AICPA tutorial……sucks.
