So I keep going to push my test date off further and further because just when I feel slightly ready, I get multiple choice questions that just blow my mind. I am using Becker and occasionally I notice that when I get a question wrong, I view the explanation and it is something that was not even covered in the lectures. This is putting me in a perpetual state of feeling like I can never be ready for this test.

Is Becker just going over these questions in the off chance I may see one… Should I stay focused on the broader picture and study basic rules for every deduction and/or credit?

I feel like I am trying to focus time on knowing things like: the deduction amount for personal AMT, or certain thresholds, and also minute details such as personal holding corps are only allowed 150k in accumulated E&P while regular corps are allowed 250k; and while I am trying to remember all of this I am forgetting similar things from Chapter 1.

Please help!! What should I focus more time on?

Chris, If you can pass FAR, you can pass REG. I think Becker FAR is far worse for teaching the concepts within the MCQ answers (right and wrong), not the actual lectures.

From what I recall about REG, if you can score around 80% of new questions correctly, you are good to go. Have you attempted the mock exam at the end of the review? Also, I would stress knowing the concepts over memorizing all the thresholds.

With REG there is definitely a sweet spot – the optimal time you should write, or yes, you will start to forget the first few chapters.

    REG Aug 20/15: 88
    AUD: Feb 29/16: 80
    FAR: Jun 10/16: 80

YES. This happens to me with Becker as well, even when I read through the chapter thoroughly. Probably cost me a test. What I started doing is as I go through the Becker MCQs, I have a word doc open where I write down all these items that pop up. After I've gone through the questions a couple times I know which ones really give me trouble and make flash cards from that word doc. 3-5 days before the test, I can review 8 word docs, that I made for each chapter and make flashcards for the items I still don't know. Drill those flash cards for the next few days and the morning of the test. I end up with ~20 flashcards per chapter, which is reviewable quickly in 60-90 minutes.

Personally, I feel like knowing all the rules helped me. They seem like a lot at first but some will stick in your mind and some won't. Make a note or a flashcard for the ones that don't stick. Move on from the ones that do.

    >>while I am trying to remember all of this I am forgetting similar things from Chapter 1.

It's the nature of the beast. There are 8 chapters and you need to know them, even non-profit and gov't. This is where it's tough. 10 chapters in FAR, 8 in REG. It's a lot. You've got to figure out how it's best for you to not only get through and learn all of them but then to be able to quickly and efficiently go back over them when you're in final review mode.

@nessie I've definitely been delaying, I recently started a new job so I am trying to cram the first 4 chapters with constant re reading of the chapter while I'm on the train in the morning and then pounding multiple choice questions. I have not yet done the reviews but plan to do at least one this weekend. My test is scheduled for next friday.

@kdawgy80 I did something similar to that with FAR and now on REG. Any time I get a MCQ wrong I use Becker's MyNotes function (which is like a word doc) to jot down any key pointer that I feel I may forget or are important as well as explanations for things I might get confused with. All of this will be printed out on Monday to review before the test.

I just need to do a lot more multiple choice questions to get my grades trending higher and then maybe practice some concepts using the sims for the last few days leading up to Judgement Day.

    Thanks for the help/input!
