    Section: Audit
First let me start with my study materials: Becker Video Lectures & Ninja Ten Point Combo
    MCQ Trending Score 72

I have been studying for AUDIT over the past year or so and FAILED 4 TIMES 72,73,71,72
First i went through all the Becker Lecture videos and then onto Ninja notes and MCQS.
After i finished the lecture videos I usually would study (do MCQ’s) for about an hour a night Monday-Thursday. I would never study on weekends or Fridays.

I know my study habits are very poor and would appreciate any advice on how i can tweak my study patterns. How much should i actually be studying and what is effective way i should be spending my time.

    Thanks

    Hello Drping11!

I just found out I passed AUD and I'm done with the exams! However; this was not an easy journey for me. I was also stuck with AUD for a year before I got my passing score. I received really bad scores and lower than yours: 61,59 & 68. I had to change my study habits and hours to work around my new job. If I remember correctly I spent 6 weeks studying for that 68 and 5 weeks for my 81. I never recorded the amount of hours I spent doing homework or studying. I just set goals for each day. I'll give you a breakout of my study schedule below:

Week 1: READ the Becker book from cover to cover. There are 6 chapters in Becker, so I did 1 chapter a day. Took notes on stuff I thought was important or stuff that I knew I hadn't fully mastered. Reading takes about the same time as watching the videos. It would take me 4 hours to finish reading a chapter, which is the time it takes to watch a lecture. But, the lecture kind of goes fast and skips some details. Try to find a place where you could possibly read out loud and explain things to yourself. This helped me a lot. You've taken this section several times and we both know that the questions are not the same ever. You need to know everything that is covered in the study materials.

Weeks 2-4: MCQs. MCQs and MORE MCQs!! I did 3,500+ questions the last 3 times I tested. Sounds like is too much? Not really. I've read about other posters here that do 4,000 to 5,000 and even more. But really, you learn more through repetition. I tried NINJA TB, Becker TB and Gleim TB. I was desperate and started memorizing questions, so that's why so many test banks.
Anyway, how did I get to answer 3,500+ when working so much? Set goals PER day. I took a blank sheet of paper and made my own calendar. Marked the days until exam day and taped it on my desk's top drawer. I had 21 days to finish 2 test banks, so that was 150 questions a day. There were days where I wouldn't meet my quota and others where I did more. I studied after work for about 2 hours. Then headed home and studied another 2 hours. You're supposed to answer the questions in like 1 minute or less, but I'm not really fast with the questions. I took more time to answer questions, but 4 hours a day for 150 questions is enough. If you're really studying it shouldn't take you more than that (1.5 mins X 150= 225. 225/60 = 3.75 hours).

Week 5: This week was really to catch up. You should be 90% done with your test bank(s) by now. Maybe you could take 3 days out of the 7 to complete TB. The other 4 days were to study SIMS & Notes. Yes, it is hard to study for SIMS because you never know what's going to hit you. But still practice a few. I didn't spend so much time with SIMS, but did practice a few for 2 days. The rest of my time were for Notes. Remember first week? Hope you take good notes. This is the time to go over them or if you have NINJA notes to read them or write them. Then if I still had time, I did practice/progressive exams in Becker.

I did the above for all of my tests and this worked for me. Yes, it didn't work 3 times BUT it really helps to stick with one thing and just tweak it accordingly. You need to put your time. If you don't want to study on weekends it would be really hard to keep the rhythm that you set during the week. And you don't have to study the whole day during the weekends. Like I rarely studied on Sundays. You're really close to passing, so keep trying. You can do it!

3000 Ninja MCQs and reading the explanation for all of the ones you miss will help. You need about three hours a night and on weekends for about six weeks. Wash, rinse, repeat for the other sections. There are no shortcuts….

I hope you have a good reason for not studying during the weekend. I can understand Friday but some would argue the weekend is the most productive time to study, especially for the full time employees and parents. You will be astonished at how much one can forget by not reviewing the material over a 3 day span. Keep reviewing the material and do thousands of MCQ before your next exam. You should be trending 85, not 72 on MCQ as an indication you are ready to pass. Trending 72 after a year of reviewing the material shows you aren't sincerely dedicated to understanding the material and instead, just answering MCQ.

If I am reading this correctly you are studying around 4-5 hours per week (1 hr/day Monday-Thursday) and wondering why its not producing results?

You should be studying 3-4 times that, no less than 15 hr per week seeing that you're scoring well on hardly any study at all. Most people put in 20-25 hours a week. I'd come back to the exams when you're ready to put in the necessary hours.

I agree with mla11692. I know everyone studies different and some people require more studying but 4 hours is just not enough. When people tell you that you won't have a life while studying for the CPA, they mean it.
In college, I only studied for a few hours the night before the exam and most times aced the exam. Now that I'm studying for the CPA exam, I study anywhere from 20-25 hours per week and the two weekend before my exam I bump that up to anywhere from 30-35. I do have a full time job so I honestly don't have a personal life and I am always tired but fortunately for me I have no other obligations (husband, kids, etc). I honestly don't know how anyone with kids studies for this while working full time but props to them because I don't think I could ever do it.

I really think you should be putting a LOT more time than that. I don't know if you have other obligations/responsibilities that don't allow you to study more. If that is the case, maybe it would be best to come back to it when you have more time. Good luck to you.

Agree with most of the posters here. You need to put more hours. I work full-time, wife w/2 kids and I am putting 20-30 hours a week (still failed FAR). Discouraged yes but need to change strategy and try harder. Keep pushing, you got this!!!

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback. I read through them all and agree that I need to add more hours to my studying.

“I usually would study (do MCQ’s) for about an hour a night Monday-Thursday. I would never study on weekends or Fridays.”

I'm not even sure where to start. You need to ask yourself how bad you want to be a CPA. If you want it bad, fix the above.
