Garbage Profession - Page 2

I’ve been in public accounting about 8 years now and every year it only becomes more and more obvious what a crap profession this is.

The pay is awful, the work is boring, and you get to see people making money because they chose the right profession by being an overpaid doctor or a stock hustler.

I know i’m bitching and moaning but I honestly wish i had a time machine to go back and never get my mba or my cpa license and study medicine or something so I can be part of their protected cartel.

Since I don’t have a time machine handy is there any way to get out of this horrible “profession” and into something that actually has advancement opportunities and good pay? I’d like to not make the last 10+ years of my life be a total waste and find something that I can at least leverage my education with. I realize my “experience” is mostly transposing numbers into a computer screen and totally worthless.

Any thoughts? Before you try to convince me how wonderful accounting is and how good the pay is, don’t bother. I’ve been in this joke of a “profession” long enough to see how little hope there is.

I’m seriously considering working as a farm hand and chucking hay bales for a living because it would be a more rewarding and pleasing job than this awful horsesh**.

My husband has no secondary education, he was lucky to graduate high school. Great guy just different career and academically. He is a professional courier (delivers for amazon), take home is what I take home with a MS and CPA, (granted he works FAR more hours, I only work 50 he works at least 70 all year) loves every second of it. Except for when its snowing out I am a bit jealous that he does so well financially without an education AND loves it.

Don't write off the menial jobs, lol. They're not at all bad if its something you like to do.

    I'm not…

Sadly I used to have ambition in life but now I'm just waiting to die.

@tr Do you need a hug? Lol I’m just kidding. Tax time is tough. Luckily, I have the best of both worlds. My husband is a highly skilled auto mechanic who restores muscle cars. If I get tired of the computer, I throw on some work boots, go weld some exhaust or do some ‘menial work’ just long enough to realize I like being an accountant and I hate being greasy all the time. It changes my perspective. 😉 Maybe you should try a smaller firm??

I need a shrink or a priest. Or maybe a high caliber handgun to put in my mouth.

^^^Try bourbon and funny youtube videos. A shrink will just take your money and say “How does that make you feel?” Seriously, I hope it gets better for you. 😉

wal-mart has openings if you're tired of being an accountant..,,,Kroger too. There is always something else too do, there is no get rich quick, house on the hill, Mercedes Benz for free career. All careers require work and commitment, some more than others. Then again, might be watching too much t.v. Find your passion and get started, no need to be miserable.

    It begins with a 75

You sound like a blast to be around.

“haven't caught any breaks”. Oh, didn't know you were owed something.

You expect higher salary b/c you scored well on the CPA exams?

    BEC - 77, 03/2015 (first try)
    FAR - 79, 05/2015 (second try)
    REG - 83, 12/2015 (first try)
    AUD - 84, 03/2015 (first try)

I got 99 problems but the CPA ain't one.

You sound like a blast to be around. <—as much as any other beancounter

“haven't caught any breaks”. Oh, didn't know you were owed something. <—true. hard work no longer pays in this country. I should've figured it out long ago.

You expect higher salary b/c you scored well on the CPA exams? <— Nope. I expect a higher salary for putting up with this miserable “profession” for 8 years and having the credentials I have.

Move to a larger city and get an industry job or find a way to monetize some of your hobbies. Look for MLM opportunities. Good way to increase your cash flow while working toward your goals on your on time. Just be resourceful.

What's funny is I that I'am you in an alternate universe. Actually Iam probably more miserable than you because Im 38, have wife and kids, kids soccer games. kids karate, kids bday parties, date night, and bunch of other crap on top of the 25hrs a week I owe these AICPA MFer's because of the 73 they said “I earned” on my last 2 retakes for FAR and AUD Came to accounting late, five years out of college. Been working as staff/senior level accountant in industry since 2004 because I don't have a CPA. I've missed out on some great opportunities because because I didn't get with the CPA program sooner as opposed to later.

tr7111 the best I can offer you is this, managing your career is like playin gawlf. Don't aim for the cart path, aim for the flag stick! You feel me?

Are you literally not making a good salary/wage or is it just not enough to compensate you for what you feel you do? Genuine question. I am starting in public accounting in fall and my starting salary is well above any other job I could have got at my level of experience, that why I ask …

Honestly if I told you what I was making you'd ask me what I was complaining about.

The trouble is I live in a high cost area so the pay isn't as good as it seems.

I'm leaning towards moving to a low cast state/metro area where I can hopefully be able to get ahead.

Everyone here is struggling to pass an exam to be able to make what I assume the OP in making (Over 100K), and he wants to kill himself. Why dont you invest your money? I only make around 75K in my boring accounting job, but I also make close to 60K investing my hard earned money.

@tr, with all respect but if you think your life sucks there are many people worse off than you. You have a paying job, have a family?, and a shelter at the very least. I am not you so I don't know what else is going on in your life, but just be grateful for what you already have and not what you don't have. On the side note, when I read that you would vote for Trump I got scared.. he is a horrible person. Not trying to bring in politics but he would NOT make America great again. He incite hatred and violence. Im done! Hope everything will work out for you.

I second Wanna_B, @Martin, would you like to invest for me as well? LOL

Wanna_B_TXCPA2014, I just flip homes with a partner (Contractor) here in the US,Spain and Peru. If Cuba turns into a capitalist country within the next 7 years, I will sell every single asset I have, and invest in that island. If Cuba goes back to being the playground for American like it was long time ago, properties will be as expensive as they are in Miami now. I could become a millionaire in 2 years, and leave this boring a$$ job.
