For those that use Roger…

I started studying FAR on Monday and am doing the following:

6-mo schedule (which provides 7 weeks of study time for FAR)
It suggests 4 days of study and 3 off during the week, but I’d rather study 5 or 6 days
    What I’m doing:
    Watch videos for section
    Take notes while watching
Do section MCQs and take notes on incorrect answers
After I do a grouping of 20 or 30 questions, I create a couple groupings of MCQs from all previous sections. Currently, I’m doing about 60 MCQs per day.

This is insanely time consuming. About 3-4 hours per section. At this rate, I’ll barely finish the lectures/Roger MCQs by week 7. I’d like to get the Ninja MCQs and maybe even the notes.. the time doesn’t add up unless I study more per day which I can’t do.

A lot of people have had success reading the book and taking notes… or copying Ninja notes and then doing MCQs.
For those of you who did this… How long did it take to read the book and do your notes? Did you remember a majority of the info by the time you started MCQs? Did you not do any MCQs while reading the book or taking notes?

Otherwise, is my plan OK? Has anyone gone with the same/similar routine? Right now, I feel like the material isn’t sticking or won’t stick, which is why I’m asking.

Trying to find a study pace/plan that doesn’t overwhelm me with anxiety or the feeling of being inefficient.

    1) Close the book and focus your attention on the lecture! If there is anything you're not understanding, rewind the lecture. Roger is known to have the best videos in the CPA Review world. (I suggest turning on the captions to get an even better focus).
    2) Read the chaper and take notes. This is the best way to retain the information. The great thing about Roger compared to Becker is that his books are clear and aren't jammed up with useless details.
    3) Do the homework questions, and actually read the explanation even if you answer correctly.
    4) When you complete Roger, buy the Wiley test bank and do the questions in “study mode”. This is a must.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck!!

I watch the lectures. If it's not making sense after watching the lectures, I'll read the book. I don't take my own notes because I am really bad at listening and writing, so I just focus on what I'm watching. I go through all the videos and then I switch over to Ninja notes and MCQ. I do most of my learning in the application. Things can make total sense when I'm watching the lecture or reading, but then I go to do questions and its like i'm reading a foreign language. I use the Roger piece more to get me familiar with/exposed to the topics so I can at least recognize where I am struggling. As I go through the Ninja notes/MCQ and find things that still don't make sense, I'll go back to the Roger lecture/book and really dig in to that part.

but I agree, going through the Roger material always takes me longer than I am expecting it to. I don't bother doing questions as I go through it with the theory that yeah I'm going to know it really well RIGHT AFTER i was just focused on only that topic, what's going to happen 6 – 12 sections later when it's not still fresh in my head.

The method I've developed for the 3 sections I've passed in the last 4 months has been to watch Roger lectures while taking notes on the material (maybe 25-30 pages of notes per exam), I don't do any of the MCQ or sims while going through the Roger program and instead try for 10-15 days of Ninja MCQ review at the end before each test. If I'm having trouble with a specific topic during review I'll go back and watch the lectures again until it makes sense.

I watch the lectures and if I need to take notes, I pause the lecture to jot something down. I also keep a totally separate notebook of nothing but mnemonics, so I can refer back to them without having to flip through my notes. I go section by section and do about 30 questions at the end of each section. I study 7 days a week. Weekdays, I spend about 4-5 hours and on weekends, I spend Saturday AM & Sunday AM studying. I take Saturday & Sunday afternoons/evenings off. For FAR I used Roger only and passed. For AUD, I supplemented with Ninja MQCs because I wanted a bunch more questions to cycle through (waiting to see if I passed). I'm hitting REG right now, but haven't decided if I'm going to add on Ninja yet. Roger's lectures are outstanding and make the material easy to grasp and remember. Good Luck.

    FAR - Passed (04/16) ROGER
AUD - Passed (05/16) ROGER & Ninja MCQs
REG - Passed (07/16) ROGER & Ninja MCQs

Thanks for all the responses. I agree. Roger's videos are awesome. My only gripe is he sometimes speeds through a section of the material (like 200mph) and it ends up being one of the MCQs haha…

For those who didn't do any MCQs and waited until all the videos were finished (I'm assuming a few weeks?), how did you do on the MCQs once you got around to them?

Also, are you reviewing the notes you took on a regular basis?

I have posts on here where I have thrown up my hands because he is reading the textbook at 200MPH, literally reading it – drives me nuts. But he is overall great at what he does.

I do MCQ's first a lot of the time and then the lectures. If I absolutely can't figure out the MCQ's I stop and listen to the lecture. Part of this is just the fact that I know I can pass without listening to the lecture, but there's no way I can pass without doing the MCQ's.

I'm not sure what people mean by notes. I sit with a bunch of printer paper and hand wrte a flash card of sorts for whatever concept I didn't understand. This method is cheap, easy and convenient.

So I started going through MCQ this weekend. I am about halfway through the assessment phase and am trending 72%. I alternate between sets of 30 MCQ and re-writing the Ninja notes. This helps me narrow in on areas where I'm struggling and stay fresh/maybe pickup facts I missed before on other areas. I go back to the Roger book/videos if I need further clarification.

I find that when I'm watching the videos it all makes sense but then when I have to actually apply it there's a “WTF” moment. So I agree with @CPA2021, I learn more from the MCQs than the lectures – but I still watch the lectures first so I have an idea of the topics and it's not totally unheard of when I'm going through the questions (although I'm going through REG right now and I feel like there have been a good amount of questions that Rog never even touched on – but I guess this is just another reason to do MCQ, it gets into the nitty gritty of what will actually be expected come exam day)
