I just finished the exams, but now what? i was looking through the applying for a license for Massachusetts and saw this long application that we have to fill out. do we really have to pay another 175 to apply for the license? and if i started full time at a big 4 about 7 months ago, but i also interned for 3 months before starting full-time, does that mean i have 10 months of experience or only 7? i am just asking because it says i need a full year of experience. thanks

Lol yes and you'll be paying that $175 every 2 years. The entire 10 mos should count as long as you were working in audit even as an intern, I think. I didn't have to have experience because I've got a master's so I'm not sure what your boss has to sign off on.

I got a masters too. I don't think that means anything besides meeting the 150 hour requirement. And $175 every two years?! That's absolute garbage

you can get a non reporting license in MA with no work experience requirements if you have a master's but you're so close to having the experience requirements met you may as well just wait and get a reporting license. Only difference between the two is I can't sign an audit, which would never come up for me anyway since I'm in industry. The state of MA doesn't differentiate its an honor system.

And wait until you are paying for CPE to renew. Good times.

By the way a non reporting license can be converted to a reporting license once the experience is met but I'm guessing there's another fee for that.

I'm looking to get a reporting license, and I just looked online and it says you need 1000 hours. Combined with full time and interning I have 1000 hours, so can I apply for the license? Or do I have to have 1000 full time hours?

I work at EY in Boston and got my license last fall, you'll need 1000 full time hours and one year full time. So even though you'll hit 1000 prior to that, you can't send application until one year from official start date. Company covers app fee and AICPA membership as well. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Ok and is it true you need to pay 175 every two years like MLA said?

Haven't gotten to the two year point yet, ha, but I believe so; but again, your big 4 covers it

Its actually only $161 every 2 years (if you were born in an odd numbered year you renew in June of every odd numbered year and if born in an even numbered year renew every even year in June) https://license.reg.state.ma.us/public/dpl_fees/dpl_fees_results.asp?board_code=PA

Also remember you'll need 80 hours of CPE credits to renew a license (they will prorate it for your first renewal, lets say you were born in an even year and get your license this June, you will do your first renewal June 2018 but only need 40 CPE credits.) Those credits can get pricey, I spend about $240 every 2 years for unlimited credits which is about the cheapest I can find but I know people in public have some opportunities to earn CPE through their firm. So on average it costs me about $200/year between license renewals and CPE credits to maintain my license which I've had for just over 5 years in MA.

does anyone know if the 3 people who write reference/character letters for you have to be CPA's? or can they just be co-worker's or friends who just attest to your good morale and character (not necessarily CPA's)?

And also do they have to physically sign the paper? Bump
