Ethics Exam and Experience

Hi all. I am currently studying for my last section of the exams (BEC) and I was wondering how do I go about the ethics exam once i am done? I am in the state of California.

Also, I need to start thinking of where to get my experience and was wondering if I can get it from or current auditor? I know that working for them or them working with us affects the independence rule, but does that apply to internships as well?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can do the ethics exam at any time. You don't have to wait until you're done with the exams. I think there is a two year window that you have after finishing the ethics exam. I took mine while I was waiting for my final exam score (waiting for my license application to be reviewed now!!! :-)). It is through CalCPA. Just google PETH calCPA and you should have no trouble finding it. Its $25 cheaper if you're a CalCPA member.

As far as experience, any general accounting experience will count as long as you were under the supervision of a currently licensed CPA. You need 12 months full-time experience. If you worked part time, you can use that too, but you have to report the number of hours and what not. The CPA who supervised you will have to sign off on the form and mail it to the CBA. Also, if the CPA is not an owner or partner in the business, then you will need two CPA's to sign off.

I highly recommend going to the CBA website.

The licensing applicant handbook is an excellent source of information for your questions. They also have checklists of all the items needed to get licensed.

    Good Luck.

In terms of experience requirement, I don't think that the 2nd signer has to be CPA. But the 2nd signer must be a higher level than the first signer (who must be CPA). If you have any questions about experience requirement, please feel free to contact licensinginfo@cba.ca.gov. They are very quick and responsive. Good luck.

It took me a year after college to find full-time work but I did find one and just completed a year. I'm waiting for certification from the CA accounting board. You're gonna have to try to get the one year experience.
I found Indeed to be useful.

@track55 impressive scores! congrats! It sucks because i got a promotion at my work about 10 months ago. I am the only one doing all the financial work there. so i am barely getting experience on my own. This means I would have to leave this job sometime next year. I am never going to get the experience i need there in order to satisfy this requirement.

So they aren't planning on hiring anyone new? If they could hire a CPA, that would be great.

@rosy thanks for the kind words but u dont see my fails. BEC is the only one I passed on first try. Back when i was looking for audit/acct work with the state of CA, I told myself I would keep looking for work that provided hours. You can stay at your job as ur passing exams to look for another job. Just dont quit till u have one. It's important to hit those 2000 hours.

I forgot to mention that once I passed an exam, i changed my Linkedin heading to CPA Candidate and showed my score. I also added the info to Indeed. I started getting tons of emails once I did that.

@Track55 Like one of my professors once said, don't ask me how many times I took the exams, ask me if a CPA.. Thanks for the advice. I am going to stay at my current job until i find another job. My boss is really happy with me and doesn't want me to leave, but if i don't then I am never going to get my experience/license. I will try linkedin too.. Thank you!
