Education Requirement – Help Please!!

    Hi all,

I have a quick question about Education Requirements – I call the BOA for NY and they literally, straight up told me they CAN’T let me know if the classes I’m going to sign up for will count. She said there were too many candidates to do this for everyone. You can’t make this stuff up. So before I just guess, and hope I didn’t waste thousands, I will turn to you guys for (hopefully) peace of mind:

I have posted before about signing up for classes via UCLA Extension to get to my 150 hours. I was hoping there is someone on here that can confirm with 100% certainty that they will count towards my overall credits, and that as long as I have not taken the exact same accounting course, that it will count towards my overall accounting hours….especially if I do not live in CA. I am applying in New York.

Thanks so much. You guys are the best.

The fact that it's an institution from another state should not matter.
The fact that it's an accredited university directly branched from UCLA should matter.
The fact that Marilyn Monroe & Arnold Schwarzenegger attended UCLA Extension may or may not matter.

I'll defer to others for your other questions. Sounds like licensing in the state of NY has been problematic lately.

Thank you! So even though they are regionally accredited, it will still count for a NY candidate? Or does it only count for CA candidates? Also, the 150 hours does not have to include Graduate classes in any way correct? The credits I took in undergraduate plus the UCLA extension will be enough?

Thank you all for any info. It's very frustrating how little the Board is to help with this process…

    Doesn't matter which state.

What's interesting is that the UCLA Anderson School of Management is AACSB accredited but UCLA Extension is not. I wonder if you can get some sort of confirmation if UCLAE business courses are directly affiliated with the Anderson School of Mgmt. Doesn't look like AACSB is required for NY state education requirements.

If you want to get licensed in another state however, you'll probably want to consider a AACSB-accredited master's degree.

I took an ethics course earlier this year at UCSD Extension and the credit from that class was accepted with no issues by the CA board of Accountancy. But, since you are in NY, I'm not sure if it matters the the institution is from another state to be honest. My guess is that it doesn't matter but don't quote me on this.

Maybe you can try giving UCLA a call and asking them. They should know. I say this because UCSD specifically stated that class credit met requirements by CA Board of Accountancy in the class description.

If I were in your position @acardone51, I would go for an MBA or MSc at an AACSB accredited uni.

It's a safer bet in the long term (you can't control legislation) and the trend is that all states want 150 hours from an accredited school or a Master's degree with an accounting focus. I don't know if the Extension school is accredited and will count for a license outside the state of CA.

As we noticed, NY doesn't seem to be in the position to be lenient. Several states seem to be even more picky.
