DRS Sims

Feel like the chances of a DRS sim on the exam being pretest is relatively high. My understanding is pretest are new questions in trial run to be graded questions for future exams. So considering how new DRS is to the exam structure, my thinking is they are still compiling pretests for them. Not saying you won’t get a graded one but saying you’re playing with a better probability than with mcqs and regular sims. Any thoughts?

First or Second quarter I would have agreed with you. Now they could be scored same as any other TBS.

I just got done with REG and I'm sure hoping so! I don't feel like they were any more difficult than the other SIMS (because you still have the AL to reference) however at least for the DRS Sims I got today, I felt like they did a poor job of stating what exactly should be calculated in reference to the supporting documentation. So they were more of a nuisance than anything. Seems to me that these are still little bumpy in how the information is presented and how they request candidates to calculate answers, in comparison to the non-DRS.

I'm hoping thats not over disclosure, and if it is sorry, please delete this post.

@TXCPAGAL12 can you give us the general idea of what the DRS sim for Reg is like. Of course, I don't want you to disclose any details, but just the general idea?

For instance, the research sims give you a topic and ask you where to find them in the AL. I don't think that's by any means disclosing any details. Did you think any of the review material assisted in preparing you for the DRS sims?

You review a document and use all the information given to you to determine whether any changes need to be made to the document. Wiley's test bank had a few sims in it for AUD, and I found them very similar to what I saw on the exam. I'm not sure how REG would be structured, but I feel like the purpose of a DRS would be the same for each exam it is tested in.

    AUD 8/18/16
    FAR 11/16
    BEC 1/17
    REG 2/17

Gotcha – so there is another tab and they say “Here is what was reported. What are the adjustments necessary??”

How they expect everyone to sift through 10 documents in 15 minutes and make sense out of the whole scenario in that period of time is patently ridiculous. In the workplace, you don't work on something like that for 15 minutes, it would take quite a bit longer. Again, it's simply another way to separate the women from the girls…or try to anyway.

I don't know where you stand in the entire process of taking/passing these exams, but a mentor of mine told me this early in the process when I raised a simialr point.

Get over it. None of this sh*t is useful in the real world. You have people around to help, guidance, the internet etc…this test is to prove you are capable of learning/memorizing/passing 4 exams in 18 months. It's not for the [girls] it's for the [women].

It was a bit of harsh advice that has helped me stop wasting time worrying about how useful/not useful the material/process was and start spending more time learning. Please don't take offense to this! I am simply passing on this advice mostly because I 100% agree with you…but it's not going to change what we have to know to pass this thing. Many have done it before us, and many will do it after us…

I put in a special effort to prepare for them but never got one. Wiley Test Bank has a few but not many.

For REG, the exhibits are: various tax forms (W-2 1099-DIV, 1099-INT,1099-MISC, 1040-ES, Schedule K-1), tax tables, MACRS tables, list of expenses paid, letter from client to the CPA, receipts, invoices, tax depreciation worksheet, balance sheet, income statement, partners' basis worksheet, corporation assignment of shares, corporation contribution of assets and services from shareholders.

The Wiley AUD ones were really cute. Many of the exhibits were full of mistakes and you are supposed to spot those mistakes. For example the client's outstanding check list doesn't add up and one of the checks has been outstanding for several months. And there is something fishy about the bank reconciliation.

If they really wanted to simulate the real world, they would let us use google during the exams. Google is the biggest teacher/mentor in the workplace.

100% agree about Google It is a lifesaver. If I'd had Google 15 years ago as an undergraduate when trying to get through Physics, I'd have done way better and maybe understood some things. But if you're an accountant, Google is your right hand.

The DRS questions are actually interesting. Well, some of them are. If they gave 30-45 minutes to work on one, that would be nice, but it ain't gonna happen.

I just took AUD last Thursday and didn't have any DRS Sims? I was anxiously expecting them but was pleasantly surprised. I wonder if it's related to the timing of receiving my NTS?

DRS is probably one of the more annoying aspects of the exam just because it's almost impossible to answer correctly and thoroughly in 15 minutes….but it could easily be a normal test question at this point in the year

FAR- taken 8/11/16....now the wait begins
    AUD- scheduled 9/8/16
    BEC- scheduled 10/9/16
    REG-scheduled 12/10/16

Live a few years like most people won't, to live the rest of your life like most people can't.
