Hi,

So I haven’t gotten back any results yet but I am thinking I will need to retake AUD some time. Do firms care? I already have a full time secured with a regional firm in the Midwest. My cousin who is a recruiter for over 20 years keep telling me to study harder which I am trying my best but it is so boring and I am sure everyone on here understands. She keeps telling me firms will know how many times I have taken the CPA but I keep thinking how would they know if I don’t say. She keeps on saying the firm could rescind your offer if you don’t pass the CPA in a year or why would I want to go to a CPA who took the exam 7x just like a doctor. Would I pay to go see someone who took the board exam 3x. I understand she is trying to help motivate me and all but this is adding more stress than already is. I recall reading my offer letter that I have 3 years but I hope to pass all before starting work in August or at least 2 or 3 sections. For those who have taken the exam more than once and are working, did your firm say anything or did it hinder your job performance?

No one cares. I'm at a Big4, CPA is required to be promoted to manager. That is it.

People will give you crap for not passing (“hey you should really get that out of the way”), but in terms of job abilities and overall performance assessment its given basically no weight. Its just an academic test, this will be put in perspective once you start working.

I don't think they would know either, but I think one could deduce you may have a failed a section or two if have consistently taken exams each testing period and 18 months have passed and you still don't have your CPA.

It depends. I work for a small firm, I work directly with the partner on a day-to-day basis and he always knows exactly when my exams are and when I get the results. As you can see, I've failed 2 exams and he did not like that. He is always happy with my work but I can tell this makes him flinch a little bit. In fact, this morning we had a conversation about whether or not I will work weekends during tax season and he is leaning towards no because he “really wants me to get these done”. In my situation, theres no way around it for me. I generally schedule exams on Mondays and he knows because I have to take those days off, so he is well aware that I have sat 4 times with 2 passes. Apparently he passed all 4 on the first try with a 97 average, but he also took the exam in 1980 where you studied for a month and a half after college you were usually good to go. We can all vouch that the exam has changed over the last 35 years, cause that would not fly for 99.99% of us. But either way, stay focused and when you get it done it won't matter anymore because you'll be a freakin CPA.

That is exactly what I told my cousin when she keep saying her friend passed all 4 in one try back in the 90's and now is a controller for this company in MN. I would go the exam definitely has changed drastically in the last few years considering the adoption of SOX etc. I know this will pay off in the near future! If there is a Will there is a Way!

CPA Candidates are just too Smart & Intelligent to take each CPA Exam section more than once. The one and only reason I know of including myself that takes CPA exams sections more than once is due to a Cute Prometric Girl or Guy that we want to see again ; )

Bottom line is did you pass. If it takes 1 time or 20 pass this thing. Some may gloat over passing the 1st time, or passing the 2nd time or even getting beyond 75. The only ones that know how many times you took a part is you and the nasba. If you don't want them to know , don't tell. The job shouldn't ask, their concern should be if you passed and are a cpa.

I'd slide over a copy of my license and tell anyone that questions the number of times I've sat, “that's odd, this piece of paper here seems to show that I know just as much as other CPAs”.

If people cared about how many times you took the exam, they'd probably also care more about what your passing scores were.

Besides, everyone has their own circumstances when they're studying that ultimately determine how long or short it might take for us to pass. Some people have kids and work, other people take the summer off, ect.

Your score report should only say credit and the date … it doesn't itemize all the attempts. I don't know what type of firm would ask for that …
