Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but in states that require a specific number of accounting hours in specific areas (financial, management, auditing, tax), do the two introductory courses count toward the accounting total?

I'm not sure what state you're in but I'm in CA, and they have a handbook on the CPA license process and it only mentions 24 accounting hours to sit for the exam and 36 to get licensed, nothing about whether or not intro classes count or not. The accounting department at my school also has a checklist of what classes I need and the intro classes do count according to them. However, there are some 3rd party sites that claim that intro classes don't count which is weird, but I'm more inclined to trust the CA Board of Accountancy's resources over a random site.

Not sure if this was helpful, but I literally also had this concern today also.

@Kelly-Green Pangsar is correct, it depends on what state you are sitting for the exam.

In Washington we are required 24 hours Accounting, but only 15 hours must be in the upper level, so my two Principles of Accounting courses was accepted. “Twenty-four semester hours (thirty-six quarter hours) or the equivalent in accounting subjects of which at least fifteen semester hours must be at the upper level or graduate level (an upper level course is defined as a course that frequently carries completion of a lower level course(s) as a prerequisite)”

On the other hand, my cousin in South Caroline has to have 24 hours of upper level Accounting courses. “The Board of Accountancy will accept traditional classroom courses and online courses that are for a set semester, led by an instructor, have required coursework and exams. Section 40-2-35(C) specifically requires at least 24 semester hours in accounting taught at the junior level or above.”

You should contact your State Accountancy Board to be certain, or you can try to go on your Board's website to see if the specific requirement is available online.

The list of State Board's website is located at https://nasba.org/stateboards/

@Pangsar: From the CA license handbook, it is mentioned that 24 units in Accounting, 24 units in Business, 20 units in Accounting Study (minimum of 6 in Accounting, maximum of 14 in Business & maximum of 9 units in other academic work related to Business & Accounting) & 10 units in Ethics are required for CA license. How did you arrive at 36 units for Accounting?

Here in Texas it is pretty strict. It specifies 30 semester hours in upper-division accounting courses. And it spells out that introductory accounting courses are not recognized by the board.
