Do I need to read the book?

I’m currently studying for BEC, then will move on to REG and AUD hopefully testing and passing before March 4th. I have Becker and was going to supplement with Ninja MCQ. I’ve decided to not watch the lectures in Becker as I don’t really take anything away from them. I’ll copy thy highlighting through the ebook. My question is if I need to read the book or if I should just do 100% MCQ? What are your thoughts on this approach for BEC, REG, and AUD? If I add in the Ninja Audio would your suggestion change?

I read the first section of AUD. I felt like it was a waste of time since I retained very little. I ended up just watching the lectures and doing the multiple choice/sims.

I started out reading the book, but I don't retain as much from it. I watch all the video lectures and take notes. Most of the video lectures cover 85% or more of the written material. Then I supplement with Ninja MCQ and review notes before the exam.

It's all about how you study best. Some people need to read the book, while others don't.

Personally, the book has way too much fluff for me and would take me forever to outline. Instead, I bought NINJA notes (basically condensed outlines) and studied those, in combination with Becker MCQ. I would ignore the lectures and the book.

You will get various answers for your question. I have to read the book even after watching the lectures. Have you ever watched something then go back on a detailed level and catch stuff you missed the first time? Well that applies here too.

Ninja flashcards and Ninja mcq have been golden for me, I'm not a big fan of the Ninja audio, videos, or notes.

Honestly, I think the Becker book is the best and doesn't give you information overload like the Gleim or Wiley books.

I sat for BEC in October and ended up with a pass. I did go back and read through the book. I did find small things that I picked up from reading that did not show up in the MCQ's and glad that I did. I didn't take notes during the reading of the book. I did notes during the MCQ's and used the reading as a review along with my notes and it worked for me. Good luck!

Personally, I need to read the book but I skipped the lectures. If I had tried to go straight to the MCQs, I would have failed miserably. Since it had been 3 years since I graduated, much of the material was new to me or I only vaguely remembered it. In REG, I had only ever taken a individual tax course, so I knew nothing about corporate/ partnership/ estate/ trust tax.

If you just graduated maybe you can go without reading. Give it a try. If on the first try at the assigned Becker MCQs you get less than 50% correct, you need to read the book.
