Curious about some of your test taking strategies

Hello, this question is for the masses….I am taking my first test (BEC) on the 28th, and wanted to ask about test taking strategies. Since some of these computational questions in the review take a few minutes, do you all skip those and answer conceptual questions first, and then come back to them? I have a bad habit sometimes of not wanting to let something defeat me, sometimes to my own detriment. Lol

    Curious as to everyone’s ideas….

    BEC (2/28/16) ----- 78
    FAR (09/10/16)-----
    AUD
    REG

    CIA, CGAP, CFE

Yep. I use the strategy I read in an SAT book back in my high school days.

If I know a problem right away or know that it's a computation I feel comfortable with, I do it immediately.

If I feel a “struggle” in my mind and know I'm gonna have to really devote some time to remembering the correct formula or procedure, I flag it and come back. I also flag questions where I'm 50/50 about my answers so I can give them one last reconsideration before I submit the testlet. I took AUD yesterday and rereading the iffy answers one last time these actually allowed me to correct 1 or 2 questions.

    BEC - 78 (August 2015)
    FAR - 80 (November 2015)
AUD - 73, 67. (Ok I gotta confess I was even more lazy this time around)
    REG - August 27th, 2016

I wouldn't skip over questions just because they're computational. Work through them, but be mindful of how much time you're spending on a question/section. If you get stumped, flag it and come back to it.

I gave myself up to 51 minutes per MCQ testlet on BEC (180 minutes for the exam x 85% of the score coming from MCQs / 3 testlets). I didn't need that much for each section, but I kept it in the back of my mind.

Good luck! Here are my test taking strategies. I've listened to other people but based mine on what worked for me in college.

    1. Always sign up for afternoon exam slots (1:30pm for me). I'm not a morning person. I like to sleep late (10am), cook myself a good breakfast, and relax for a couple hours.

    2. I wouldn't skip questions if I were you. I never flag them either. I always read each question twice before picking an answer – even for the easier ones. I think people waste more time skipping or flagging questions because once they go back to them, they have to reorient themselves with what the question is about. I can almost always narrow it down to 2 answers – I just go with my gut and move on. 1 MCQ is likely not going to make or break me, and I'd rather have enough time for the TBS's, which count much more.

    3. Show up to Prometric early. Each time I show up at least 30 minutes earlier. Prometric has always let me start early too (I get the same amount of time in total).

    4. Print an extra copy of your NTS and keep it in your car. This way if you leave the house and forget about it, you have your spare copy in the car.

    5. Breaks – do what works best for you. Most people say don't take breaks because your clock still runs, but I think it's good to give yourself a breather – especially between testlet 3 and the WC's. You do have to watch the clock and make sure you are ahead of time though. I took a break between every testlet for AUD and REG, and I still finished both with an hour to spare.

    6. RELAX! It's easier said than done. From reading this board, I think test anxiety plays a big part in whether or not people pass. I'm a big believer in self-visualization – I spend about 10 minutes in the car listening to some music on my phone that's upbeat and I imagine myself doing well and passing. I've even had the Prometric people comment on how usually the CPA exam takers are so strung out, but I'm chill like I'm about to go to sleep.

CRUNK music all the way to the testing center. Just like game day!

On a serious note, I'm also not a fan of flagging or skipping questions. By test day I either know the answer or i don't. Although time hasn't been an issue for me, I don't want to waste a lot of it on a question that might not even be graded. I also try to get through all three testlets and take a break before the sims.

(Hint Drake really does the trick for making you feel like you're prepared)

    FAR 10/24/15 - 87
    BEC 11/30/15 - 88
    AUD 01/10/16 - 88
    REG 02/27/16 - 77
