Critique my FAR Review Plan

My last and only real FAR attempt was halfhearted at best. I studied very little and only spent decent time on NFP/Govt which according to my score report was the only area I scored comparable in. Anyway, here I am a month into my studying with Roger and I wanted to have those that have passed evaluate my study plan and offer criticism or helpful points.

Roger’s course is 31 sections long and I am just over halfway done. My exam date is August 3rd and I am slated to be through the material by July 22, giving me just under two weeks to review. I do work full time, but I will be carving out some full days to review in the weeks leading up to my exam. I have done very well making a schedule and keeping myself on track. I watch lectures for each section and take notes to get a general understanding of the concepts and after each chapter I work MCQ’s on that material. To keep the older material fresh I divide the chapters up into blocks (block 1 is chapters 1-4) and do additional MCQ’s on those chapters each night – I’ll do block one on Monday, block two Tuesday etc. I mix it up and use Rogers software and NINJA, and will select questions I have missed or let the software select them. I know I have to constantly work problems and see and use the material for it to stick. Even after all that, there are some areas that are just difficult for me to grasp. I try to strike a balance between digging in and figuring it out and simply moving on and spending my time more wisely nailing down items that I know are more frequently tested.

I try to study each day until I just can’t do it anymore, and then I retire to the couch and watch Youtube videos on areas that I need additional clarification on. When I mow the yard or workout, I am listening to lectures of various areas I have reviewed before. I don’t know if there is much benefit to it, but I figure it can’t hurt.

At this point I feel okay with what I have studied thus far. Certain sections I am trending in the high 80s, and others I am in the 60’s. My goal is to just keep cycling through the material and hammering the MCQ’s and taking notes on what I missed and why. In m review phase I will continue doing MCQ’s but also begin to add SIMS from both Ninja and Roger on areas that align with the AICPA blueprint. From my experience the SIMS on the exam are so different and much broader than what any of the review courses offer that I am not focusing on them as much as I have in the past. I don’t do notecards, but I do plan on making this stuff my life until test date. No music, just audio lectures. I am thinking about concepts and items I have reviewed in the shower, in the car, and when I am trying to sleep. I hate it.

I keep telling myself to embrace the suffering and I can pass FAR if I put in the time over the next month. They cant test me on everything, and everyone else is dealing with the same volume I am. I am focusing heavily on PPE, bonds, leases, Revenue recognition, pensions, inventory, NFP and govt, cash flows.

I apologize for the lack of brevity – am I on the right track compared to those that passed? Anything else I should include in my plan? Thanks everyone.

Hey. You know yourself best and you managed to pass your other exams, so i recommend that you keep at it and stick to your plan.
FAR is a heartbreaker. It’s a bully. But it’s not rocket science either.
I took and passed FAR on my first try after a lot of studying, hammering in flashcards, even practicing sims, writing and re-writing my notes. You just have to put in the work. You’ll be fine
