Hello. I currently reside in Virginia. I never worked in the private sector, always government. My work revolves around audit, taxes, and financial statements. However my direct supervisor, or no one for that matter in my agency has a CPA. I saw some threads were some had been lucky and a “non-cpa” signed off the verification with no issue. However, I just called the Virginia Board of Accountancy, and they said it “must be a CPA.” They said my direct supervisor doesn’t have to sign it off, but anyone else in the agency who is a CPA can.

I’m confused, I sent them an e-mail so I can get something in writing, but I’m not going to quit my job to work for a CPA just so they can sign that form. Anyone in a similar boat? Thanks.

I learned that any CPA who can verify my work experience can sign off on it. Doesn't have to be my direct employer. So I have a few professors who have CPAs that I can contact to verify my work experience. I also learned NASBA does it, but for a fee. Anyways, if anyone else knows any different, please let me know

Past professors might not be able to verify your work experience. If your gov't job has any type of external audit, you might be able to get someone from the outside audit firm to verify your work, as they review/audit things you work on.
NASBA does experience verification for a select number of states. Yours may or may not be one of those states.
I'd suggest you look up the actual laws governing CPAs in your state to read the fine print on experience verification.
