CPA Work Experience Requirement

So for my state (Georgia), I am required to have the following regarding experience:

    – One year (2000 hours) of accounting experience
    – This experience must be earned no longer than one year prior to CPA licensure application. There may be no breaks in service longer than one year.

I worked for a public accounting firm for about 2 years until I quit in October 2017. So, if I pass all my exams and meet all the other requirements before October 2018 then I will be licensed. But I don’t see myself completing all parts by October 2018. So, if I were to get a job by or before October 2018 and lets say I pass all parts by December 2018 then will I have met the experience requirement or am I missing something?

I really feel pressured by this October 2018 deadline “1 year of no experience gap” because I most likely won’t be able to complete the exam sections before then and would then need another full year of working before I can be certified?

Thanks so much for any input and sorry if I wasn’t as clear as possible. Let me know if I can clear anything up. 🙂

    Hello Shambles,

I am also from Georgia. Unfortunately that is how I read it as well “Must be completed no more than 1 year preceding the date of the application.” However, certain non public accounting experience is allowed as well. If your new job has a CPA that you work under then I am pretty sure that would be allowed as well. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    Thank you for answering.

Below is the response I received below so I will still need to think about my plan.

“There are too many variables in your scenario to give a definitive answer. My initial inclination would be no since you voluntarily left the firm you were working for so that the break in service would restart your time period.”

I'm kind of in the same boat except that I'm unemployed. Now I'm curious as to what Michigan has to say…

I'm curious what they would have to say. I'm unemployed currently as well. Try contacting NASBA as well, I was also directed there by my state board but I still have no clear answer from any of them and it's frustrating.

I need some advice on work experience as well. I just discovered while applying for license that my current boss let his CPA license go inactive to my surprise. I do have 2 years of Big 4 experience. Does anyone know if I can contact the HR department there to complete the work experience supervisor form? Or do I need to get in contact with an old manager?
