CPA Eligibility Question

I have a few questions regarding the following requirement:

    (1) at least 30 semester hours, or the equivalent in quarter hours, of undergraduate accountancy courses which shall include no more than six semester hours of accounting principles and no more than three semester hours of business law.

When they say accounting principles courses… what exactly does that mean? For example, as part of a general business degree you are required to take Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting – which in my mind are principles classes. However, then as part of the accounting concentration of the business degree you may be required to take Financial Reporting I and II, or Advanced Managerial Accounting. My question is if those courses are also considered principles courses or if they count towards the 30 hour requirement?

I was approved to sit for the exam. I have an accounting degree. I have 150 credit hours from a double major. I want to make sure I will not have any issues once I pass the exams.

Accounting principles classes should just include intro to Financial and Managerial Accounting. The rest of the upper level accounting classes should count for the 30 hour requirement.

Honestly, it will be much better for you if you just call / email your state board for clarification. I had somewhat of a similar question and they were able to answer it once right away and the other time they got back to me in a day. You'll have more peace of mind by hearing there are no problems directly from the source vs. from an online forum.

Thank you for the advice. I actually had taken that approach initially by calling the NC board, but the person in charge said she would not evaluate my transcript until after I submitted an application for the certification… Needless to say, I was sort of dumbfounded. The whole point of my question was to make sure I had all my ducks in a row BEFORE I finish the exams and pay to apply for the certification. I think I am probably in the clear, but was hoping maybe someone had come across this same issue in the past. Does a university accounting degree automatically qualify you? And then you just need the extra credits to hit 150?
