    Hello everyone,

I currently work at a hedge fund administration company as a fund accountant and was just curious about what potential career paths are available and if it would be in my best interest to obtain my CPA to expand my options for this career path. Please let me know your thoughts.

If you want to advance in accounting, then yes, it's almost required to get your CPA at some point.

If you are happy limiting yourself at the manager level, or equivalent depending on company size or fund strategy/AUM, then it's not necessary.

Financial services can be lucrative since the industry is unique and not many people have that same skillset. The opposite is also true. Since your skills become very specialized over many years, your value to non-hedge funds or non-financial services entities will decline somewhat over time until you reach the executive levels where skills are more transferable.

At the end of the day, interest in the industry and your specific employer should drive your decision.

Do you feel your company grows people and are you happy with what you see as possible careers? Personally, I would hate hedge fund administration, but many other people love it and find it interesting.

Hey, we are actually in a similar position, but I am you in a few months when you pass! I work for BNY Mellon as a fund accountant and I passed in February. I have not found another position yet, but I would absolutely recommend passing the exams. I feel like there are much more engaging careers than fund accounting. I don't know anyone that has a CPA in my office and honestly I don't think you need one.
