ParticipantAnyone know the trick to passing FAR? I got a 94 on REG and 92 on BEC so far, but only got 69 on FAR first time around. I find it really weird that the scores are so different, but I guess BEC and REG were pretty easy in comparison. Is this at all normal? Studied the exact same way as I did with BEC and REG…

ParticipantBigcore20, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Financial Accounting is my nemesis too! I passed the others without having too much trouble. But FAR I feel like its one of those that I can't defeat and ultimately expire my passed sections. I need some help too. 🙁
Spent 4 days on F2 and still not finished. Just skimmed over the SIMS and they look completely horrifying. Falling behind by a chapter.. ouch. I hope others on here can offer us some help.
BEC- PASS

ParticipantFAR is always the most difficult tests no matter whose taking it. Just from personal advice, I'd focus on F8 and F9 as that will determine 25-35% of your exam. Next, I'd focus on cash to accrual acct (F2 which helps also with cash flows for F7), and then the big IFRS stuff like partial goodwill etc.
The thing about FAR is they can't test everything but I feel like those are some of the primary stuff tested consistently across the board.
FAR- taken 8/11/16....now the wait begins
AUD- scheduled 9/8/16
BEC- scheduled 10/9/16
REG-scheduled 12/10/16Live a few years like most people won't, to live the rest of your life like most people can't.

ParticipantTook me 6x to pass FAR. Biggest thing with test confidence and pattern recognition.
I see you both are you using Becker my advice do odds or evens of the HW. Review information based upon lowest score to highest score. Classify your errors ie misread question, math error, confused concept. The first 2 are the easy fixes, the last one is the doozie. Thats where you should spend your time. Find an example in the text and step through the mechanics of the calculations. Then reason through the “whys” of the rules. Make some type of pic that allows you to organize the information provided so you can filter the unnecessary info. For bonds & leases i made am schedules. For LKE I did journal entries. Cash to accrual and similar problems i vertically wrote the BASSE mneumonic. These visual cues along with putting the accounting rules in words i could understand vs jargon helped alotDecember 5, 2016 at 12:02 am #1370958letsrun4it
ParticipantIt's super normal to have some subjects more difficult than others.
For me, my study time and results were crazy different:
BEC: 900 MCQ/85
AUD: 800 MCQ/86
REG: 4800 MCQ/74,78 (4800 MCQ over 2 attempts)
FAR: 5300 MCQ/76BEC: 85
REG: 74, 78
AUD: 86
FAR: October?December 5, 2016 at 1:07 pm #1371075cpa007

First time ….This is what i did….. studied and try to do all the Questions in Wiley book , But that was a big mistake . Got 64.
Second time I changed my study style got 73… failed but closed…. (because i was week on SIMs only and comparable and strong on every thing.)Third time 80. , Only focused on my week areas like installment sales , inventories, consolidation , fixed assets, bonds, leases . mostly all the JE .Also for Governmental and NFP, try to understand there F/S and I/S. And mostly all the sims in wiley book. If some are really weird i left them alone and read and look the answers. It gave me knowledge to handle sims on exam , which was my week area.
I try to do old and new questions and understand the concept behind every question. Instead of doing 100 question i did 25 each time and checked the answer why i was wrong . Then went back to text to that particular topic and read that area. Instead of going chapter wise i did it topic wise .Example leases first i did operating lease. then i did capital lease, once comfortable then moved to IFRS on the same topic.
I used Yeager, Wiley book and supplement with Roger. Try to change the review , try to hit your week areas . FAR is one of the difficultly exam of all. You are very close. All the best .December 5, 2016 at 1:26 pm #1371165hasy
ParticipantI was going to make a thread about this but since this was brought up. I remember my sister used to tell me that there were 2 types of people in this world, you're either a Mariah or a Whitney. As an accountant, I finally understood what she meant. There are 2 types of people too, you're either a REG or an AUD person. For me, I think if you passed REG, you CAN pass FAR. Hell, you can pass ANY test after REG. To me, I think REG is so much harder than FAR.
But similar to what the other people, people play to their strengths. My only advice for FAR is not forcing yourself to memorize everything, you need to understand every topic to a certain degree. I would take a look at the CSO and try to base your studying off that. I know one person did it and it was a lot more efficient that way. If you force yourself to understand and grasp the parts that are more heavily tested, you'll most likely do better. SIMs are always hit or miss because sometimes you get SIMs that you're like, did I even learn this? Given that it seems that you're not doing well on them, I would make an effort to practice more SIMs and understand why you did it wrong in the first place. Also, PRACTICE and STUDY journal entries. For every transaction there is, understand the journal entry and how it relates to the F/S. Don't despair, those are good scores. Keep it up.

ParticipantMy advice for FAR, and any exam you struggle with, is that you should teach a non-accountant the material.
Why should it be a non-accountant? Typically, and accountant will understand the material to an extent, but with a non-accountant, you have to teach them everything in a simplified way. If you are able to get a non-accountant person to understand the material based on how you teach it, you will, ultimately, learn the material yourself.
REG: 80 (02/19/16)
AUD: 83 (04/11/16)
BEC: 78 (05/28/16)

ParticipantTotally agree with Hasy – use that CSO. If it's less than 5%, I'd get yourself to the point where you can narrow down an MCQ to the 2 best answers, and move on. Even though there is SO much material – that's actually a blessing. Don't get lost in the details – it's impossible for them to test you over everything. Also, know you can do this. Your scores in your other exams should give you the confidence to know you can pass the last one. 🙂
BEC - 88 8/29/15
REG - 82 11/14/15
AUD - 83 1/8/16
FAR - 80 2/29/16December 5, 2016 at 11:23 pm #1371669A1lessio
ParticipantI'm definitely in the same boat. Passed Audit and Regulation on the first try and really struggling with FAR. My Becker mcq scores are about 10-15 points lower for FAR than the other sections. I only do 30-40 mcqs per study session, because I get so sick of the constant computations and I like to write everything out. Exam is scheduled for Jan 20th and currently on F6. I'm going to need one hell of a 2 week review/cram session.
Like other people said, I think it's important to not obsess over the details and try and learn everything. For instance I spent 5 hours yesterday doing 35 pension problems and reviewing lectures, memorizing journal entries, understanding how pension expense impacts AOCI, etc. In reality the exam will probably have 1-2 pension problems and they will be a basic PBO calculation.

ParticipantDan A1lessio, I got FAR Jan 16th LOL and I'm still on F2.. This chapter is a PAIN IN THE A$$! I can't seem to understand anything. Averaging 40-50's with some 60-70's every now and then. I would rather study REG or any other sections. I really hope adding ninja in my last 2 weeks will help.
BEC- PASS

ParticipantMajor Tip : Governmental & NFP accounts for a big portion of the exam. If you know those topics real well, those are easy points there. That's how I passed FAR.

ParticipantF2 caused me to have a panic attack. One tip that helped for that chapter is to re-listen to those lectures in your free time. Stuff really clicks.
