Can't Pass REG

My only C in accounting undergrad was intro to tax. I’ve now failed REG twice, putting in the same amount of hours as I did for FAR (around 120-130) each time, using Becker. I don’t know what else to do as I’m not even close to a passing score. Obviously did fine on the other exams, but I believe very strongly in learning the concepts/reasons behind the things that I am learning instead of just strictly memorizing things.

    Anyone have any tips/advice?

I failed it twice (once back in 2012) and then once this last round, and then I just found out I passed. The first two times I took it I used Becker. This last time I switched it up and got Roger CRAM and Ninja MCQs. It made all the difference. I increased my score by 21 points. Becker was great for the other sections, but for REG it just didn't click.

Use other study materials in addition to your Becker.

I used NINJA Notes, MCQ and Audio as well as Becker.

I have seen Becker so many times that I was able to answer the questions with out knowing why the question was correct. The other materials often have different questions in addition to some of the same questions.

I think the SIMS are my biggest weakness, and i used Becker supplemented with the NINJA MCQ book. I don't think either of them had ssims that were anywhere close to as challenging as the ones on al 3 of my exams. Does anyone know of other materials that have sims that more closely resemble the exam?

    @monikernc- but of course!

@mdil92- The Ninja SIMS were pretty comparable to the ones I got on the exam. There was only one SIM on the exam that was completely out of left field. I filled in as many 0s as I thought would make sense and that may have gotten me partial credit if that one was even counted. I found it really hard to study for SIMS. They're are so broad in range that I think it's really difficult to peg. I changed my attitude halfway through studying this last time- I really focused on figuring out what the question was asking, and then using the AL to see if I could find any hints that would job my memory rather than focusing on figuring out each little question. That really helped.

@lswang you mentioned the Rogers CRAM. Do you think that was more beneficial than the NINJA materials? I'm considering getting that and NINJA this time around

I never tried NINJA's materials, but I've heard good things about them. The MCQs were AMAZING. The MCQs do come with multiple choice and SIMS. Roger CRAM was awesome. I had a good enough background to follow the fast pace, and he was upbeat and funny- really easy to listen to. I found myself cracking up during the lectures to the point where my boyfriend, who knows and cares nothing for accounting whatsoever, would come stand behind me and laugh at Roger's jokes. (We didn't do much while I was studying…)

So keeping it short and to the point. I used Becker as my primary and supplemented with Ninja MCQ. I go through all the material in Becker once following the course schedule. After that I reread the and take notes and redo all the HWK and SIMS. After that I start Ninja MCQ and the Nina SIMS. I focus on section I'm doing bad in Ninja MCQ and relook at them in Becker

The SIMS was my weakness the 1st time around so I focused on them more the 2nd time.

I know I've spent countless late night hours and they paid off. Stay committed and stay focused and you will overcome REG.

You're never going to understand the reasons behind most of the tax concepts. Why would we know why the government taxes as much as they do? You have to adjust to every exam. Instead of doing every test your way, try something else! If you passed the other 3 exams, YOU CAN PASS REG. Just a fact.

I used becker and Ninja MCQ. I believe the Ninja MCQ definitely played a big role in my score. Also, the only C I ever got was in cost accounting..so now I'm scared.

    FAR 76 (8/1/2015)
    AUD 83 (10/17/2015)
    REG 85 (1/9/2016)
    BEC 83 (2/27/2016) DONE!
