Hoping to get many responses so I can get a feel for your experience, and how to approach the conversation with my employer. They promised me a raise, without specifics…

Our value does not come from our skills and abilities, as good as they may be; it does not come from our GPA, our job, a promotion from that job to a better job, our success on the CPA exam, or anything of the like; but our value comes from the fact that we have a Creator who loves us, cares for us, and desires to help us navigate the rough waters of this life in a way that provides security, hope, and true, everlasting joy while we anticipate the life to come, with Him.

You should expect total comp increase of 5 to 10% if your company is generous. Unfortunately having a CPA is not as valuable in private unless your company puts a lot of emphasis on getting licensed. The biggest raise you will get is from a promotion internally or at a different company. There are many manager/controller level positions that pay more but will not even consider candidates without a CPA.

I think you got some good feedback one of the few times you asked this question

    https://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/topic/they-guaranteed-me-a-raise-once-i-pass

Also, I did a search of the forum and found a handful of people that asked the same question and got some good responses.

It depends on what industry you work in. I work in a small contractor gig, w/ contracting. When people find out what other people make, they complain stomp their feet, and the boss pays anywhere between 20% to 50% more depending on the person. For instance one employee threatened to quit and the following week boosted their salary up 30% and more PTO. and that employee has no designations or anything (the employee has only been working there 6 mos as their first job). Another employee started in 2014 went from 50k to 120k within 3 years.

So I guess it really depends who you work for, performance measures, and good negotiation skills.

My company paid for exam fees and gave me $2,000 for passing. I also got an $11,000 raise and more responsibility not long after that. Whether they want to admit it or not, having the CPA makes you stand out in a crowd. It also does bring with it more responsibility and research because people expect you to know how to find answers to tough questions.

I think the value put on the designation will depend on the company and department. My very first job out of college I worked in internal audit and when I decided to go back to school to get enough credits to sit for the exam my supervisor reminded me constantly that the CPA was not needed to my job and that I would not get a raise outside of the normal annual raises once I passed the exams. So I always knew that once I was done I had to transfer to a different department or find another job.

For OP it sounds like he was told he would get raise but not too sure how much that would be or what to ask for since that was not brought up at the time. All you can do is go to them and tell them that you have finally passed and bring up the conversation you had when they told you that you would get raise.

I suck at negotiation. When I found out how much my predecessor made, I just kept quiet and kept working even though my boss and everyone in the office know and keep saying I am the best person in this position for many many years.
