JBLParticipantWhat is the most effective way to remove wrinkles from your suits at home? I just started an office job and have to start wearing suits everyday and I was curious to what the users on here did to get their clothes looking sharp.

wombataholicParticipantEither take your suits to the dry cleaners or learn to iron.

alborelandParticipantI'm not sure if ironing suits is recomended. You probably have to read the tag. If you hang them properly then they usually stay in good shape as long as they weren't crushed into a ball. Also, a steamer might be easier and cheaper than going to the dry cleans when you don't need to press the entire thing.

EuroAddictParticipant– Dry cleaner
– Hang up immediately when you get home
– Downy wrinkle release
– Hang in bathroom while you shower (at home steam).-----------------------------

JBLParticipantSo after washing a dress shirt, would using one of those handheld steamers be sufficient to remove the wrinkles and it look enough for a professional setting?
I should also note I am cognizant of cost, but then again, if some steamer or iron really does a great job of removing wrinkles then I wouldn't mind spending extra.
I am just so confused because I hear some people iron clothes and then others prefer steamers and there just seems to be a plethora of ways to remove wrinkles.

NessieParticipantHand steamers do not really work, unless its like a paper thin blouse that can’t be ironed.
If you get a chance look up how the dry cleaner actually irons. They basically put a shirt on a perforated blow up doll then blast it with steam. Trumps a hand iron every time. For some weird reason, men’s shirts only lost a few dollars to clean/iron. For women, it;s more like $5-8.00. Apparently, women shirts don’t fit on the dolls, so we have to pay extra….

JBLParticipantWouldn't it be best to just buy an expensive piece of equipment for home use to remove wrinkles instead of going to the dry cleaners over the years. It would save money in the long run and not sacrifice quality, such as leaving more wrinkles. Or am I mistaken?

kcrcParticipantIf you want pressed clothes you have to iron, iron iron. Also STARCH, STARCH, STARCH. Steaming it or doing the shower trick will certainly relax your clothes, but you won't get that crisp look that all the directors and executives have. It'll become the most onerous task of your life, but you have to do it unless you want to look like a total slob. My career hasn't ever taken off, but the instant I make any more money I'm outsourcing the ironing. In the long run it eats up so much of your time that $0.99 per shirt looks pretty attractive.
While I haven't accomplished much, I have been praised by coworkers for having crisply ironed clothes unlike a lot of the guys who buy “wrinkle free” shirts and think they're fooling anybody. It sucks more than anything, but do your ironing. And buy a nice Rowenta. Nothing under $60.

EuroAddictParticipantlol – wrinkle free is the way to go . Who wants to be ironing weekly during busy season?
Gotta iron the collars for sure tho.

ruggercpa2bParticipantBanana reprublic has wrinkle free shirts that you can wash and then steam. However, you probably want to invest in an iron. I find that steamers do not always get you that good looking crisp look unlike when you get your clothes dry cleaned or ironed. I try to stay away from items that require dry cleaning just because I am cheap.
Banana Republic always has sales. I would buy maybe 3-5 shirts and maybe a black pair of pants for now. And then later get a few more pairs of pants. As long as you are well groomed and your clothes aren't wrinkly, no one notices that you you own maybe 5 pairs of shirts.
Getting something expensive does not replace getting your clothes cleaned. The reason you take stuff to the dry cleaner is because you cannot wash them yourself, I have washed things stubbornly that said dry clean only and ruined a few items. I always look at tags before I buy anything just because I consciously try to avoid buying dry clean only items.

NessieParticipantAs a woman who enjoys ironing, I can tell you it takes a good 5-10 minutes to properly iron a men’s shirt. I was taught the correct way as part of military training lol! This is assuming you iron when the shirt is perfectly, slightly damp. I’m not sure about no iron shirts, but if you are dressing to impress, an ironed shirt will look better, but not sure of your needs.

monikerncParticipanti use a hand held steamer for most but it is a pain. banana republics clothes are the best because most of their pants can be thrown in washer/dryer – not all so read the label. but for things like jacket or synthethics i use a spray bottle and dampen then lay a smooth linen hand towel over and iron with medium heat then hang to dry before wearing. for cotton i use the spray bottle to dampen and iron hot. i never put water in the iron. good luck.
