BEC WC – Practice or Don't? - Page 2

    The consensus on here seems to be “if you’re a strong writer, don’t worry about studying for the WC…just make sure you use proper grammar, repeat the question, and use an intro, closing, and proper salutations. Technical accuracy isn’t that important as long as it’s not glaringly inaccurate”.

    That said, should I truly not bother studying for the WC section? I have 8 days until exam day. How, if at all, should I prep for this part?

    @Bear, good idea 🙂

    @mla,

    I learned (during the CPA) to know what I know. Even if I forget the details I can look them up because I know I once knew how to do it.

    If I had never bothered to learn it, I'd tend to shy away from it during work situations, which would hinder my career.

    Saying the CPA exam is worthless for its content is also a negative attitude, just one step away from saying don't bother studying hard because it all ends at Prometric.

    I took the attitude that the information I was learning was valuable, if not then, then in the future, and that positive attitude carried me throughout the process.

    Even a little thing like knowing the Balanced Scorecard (BEC topic) helped me recently join a business group.

    Never said the content of the exam was worthless. By and large the content of the exam should be like a cumulative review of every single class that qualified an individual to sit in the first place some topics in greater detail or more comprehensive view but nothing on the exam should be entirely foreign to people meeting requirements to sit. So I respect your point of view but stand firm by mine that whatever you walk away from the exams with you likely had long before your first NTS. The exam is just finals on crack used as a barrier of entry, and it's a substantial barrier not because it's difficult but it's expensive and a big commitment.

    In a perfect world, yes it is 100% review of prior coursework, but in reality everyone has to fill in some gaps during CPA preparation, whether corporate taxation, business law, govt acct or consolidations, or even memo writing…

    @ ohiostate..ignore MLA hes a hiring manager who spends his days on here trying to tell people his expertise and why the y are wrong..really just someone who likes to put others down and pick fights if he doesnt agre

    I dont even really see why the guy got the CPA since its worthless to him and not important to actually understand the issues..but then again probably why hes a hiring manager for a company and not a CFO or Partner somewhere.

    Amohr not sure what your problem is with me personally, we've had issues and I apologized to you and you claimed to accept that apology. I'm a woman by the way. I'm cool with whatever you can dish out but use the correct pronouns, thanks.

    In CPA excel, I think there were 30 WC practice questions. I'm a strong writer, but I actually practiced writing 3 of them, and I'm glad I did. This allowed me to get my standard intro and conclusion down in my head. For the other 23, I skimmed through the suggested answers as a refresher on the subject matter and as an indicator of what to expect on the exam. BEC was my first test, so I really had no idea what to expect going in.

    BEC - 90 - 2/04/2016
    AUD - 97 - 2/29/2016
    FAR - 92 - 4/19/2016
    REG - 88 - 5/19/2016

    amohr, I'm going to politely help you out after thinking over your statements about someone you don't know.

    First, take a look at my signature I am a finance manager. Yes in the context of discussing the use of recruiters I mentioned I have experience from the other side as a manager who has used recruiters to hire. Anytime you are curious about my resume or credentials all you have to do is ask. I've been a controller at a previous job and currently finance manager where I am. I am not a CFO,nor do I desire to be, I am exactly where I set out to be in life. Its flattering that you remember that conversation so vividly, wish you could also remember the fact that we reconciled our differences.

    Second, I have 23 years ACCOUNTING experience in industry, specifically in small business, manufacturing and am an expert on DoD contracts. Not a single day in public, although I've had offers it didn't work with my lifestyle as a mom. I know you wish to demonstrate your professional experience as well but lets be honest, its about 3 years in sales, some time as a personal trainer and a professional MMA fighter. I would never presume to tell you that my semi regular visits to Planet Fitness entitle me to debate training with a personal trainer so lets not try to pretend that you're in any position to debate me on accounting career advice.

    Third, putting others down and picking fights is what was done earlier in this thread with statements like
    “No, no, avoid practicing at all costs. Avoid studying, preparation and practice for the CPA exam, because that is how you avoid 71s on Another 71.com That is indeed the consensus, and the consensus is always right. Look at me, I studied and I barely passed. Had I not studied, I would have been an EWS.” Picking fights is saying someone is shooting their mouth off for presenting a different opinion. That wasn't me. I give a different viewpoint than others but am never rude or disrespectful.

    Finally, I have helped hundreds of people here because I like to. With explanations to multiple choice questions, career perspective from an industry standpoint and advice as someone who is old enough to be a mother to 90% of the people here including yourself. I don't sugar coat anything but I am not disrespectful in general. The one time I was to you I sincerely apologized but I will not again. If you want to hold a grudge that's cool, I've seen people come and go here that disliked me but they are a very small minority and I can tell you I am not going anywhere.
