I've found the best way to memorize that is to think about it logically. I would definitely memorize as many duties as I could, for each person, but also think about it logically.
When you think of a programmer, what do you normally think of? Someone, who writes programs. If a programmer were to handle the operating system, couldn't he create programs to hide fraudulent activity and overwrite the system? Yes, yes he could, therefore we need an administrative type role, essentially a security person to lock down certain partitions of the computing environment.
In addition, should the programmer be allowed to handle data files, since he already has a job (writing the main programs)? Absolutely not; therefore, we need someone to handle the files. What does a librarian do? Ensures that books are taken care of; therefore, a file librarian ensures that files are properly taken care of, within the system.
Should a programmer or librarian be allowed to analyze things? Definitely not, since they already have a job to do; this role belongs to the system analyst. He looks at the system and analyzes what will be needed.
I do get a little confused because many times it is asked “which roles can be combined?” I'm pretty certain that roles, which are most similar/related can be combined, but I'm nowhere near certain on that part. I also don't quite understand or comprehend what constitutes “similar;” this is a very grey area, which I am weak on.
