How crucial is it to know the many formulas that are in BEC. I am going through Ninja right now and am getting a lot of questions that require computing with formulas. How much time should I put into reviewing the formulas and calculations?

Just my two cents, I studied the formulas like crazy thinking there were going to be a ton on the exam. To be honest though, the ones that ended up being on the exam you could have answered with common sense. I would focus your attention on understanding the IT and COSO sections, and really reading all of that material because it's actually a very conceptual test and not so much computational. You should still touch on the formulas, but don't be like me and focus the majority of your attention on them. Good luck!

    BEC: 77 (2/27/16) - The bubble sucks
    FAR: 90 (7/20/16) - AND DONE FOREVER!!!!!

I agree with above. IT and COSO should be a bigger focus, but I wouldn't neglect the formulas. I would learn all of the basic formulas, not put too much attention (but still try and learn) the crazy combinations of formulas that a lot of the Ninja MCQ have.

    Just b/c these 2 people didn't have many formula Q”s doesn't mean you won't 🙂

    -----------------------------
    BEC - 77, 03/2015 (first try)
    FAR - 79, 05/2015 (second try)
    REG - 83, 12/2015 (first try)
    AUD - 84, 03/2015 (first try)

I got 99 problems but the CPA ain't one.

You need to work with the formulas enough for some of them to stick. However, the exam formulas are not typically as detailed and involved as the homework. The concept questions can often stem from the calculation/formula, so just memorizing formulas may not be enough. Just try to understand the material. As one of the pp mentioned, a lot of the calculations are common sense when you understand the objective.

I advocate understanding the formulas (and how they may be asked) more than just rote memorization. I didn't really memorize them per se, I went through my Becker book and did every single example they listed by applying each formula. After a while you get used to them and how to apply them.

I did make flashcards that I went through with notes and breakdowns of how to go about solving for a particular formula.

I needed to know the formulas for my test. I had a lot of calculations. I used home made flash cards to help with memorization. At a bare minimum, you have a solid 2 weeks to memorize them. Don't feel doomed and gloomed; just get it done! Better to be safe, then sorry. 🙂

Hokinizeu is right! I made most of my homemade formula flashcards while studying for FAR (my first test.)

I saved those flash cards and used them for AUD (my second test.) And then I also needed them for BEC too (but BEC has a lot more formulas than you'll need to know for FAR and AUD.)

I memorized most of the formulas. I didn't memorize the ones my review material said would be given. That was a mistake. Memorize them ALL.

As you study and learn to understand the concepts and the calculations things will start to stick. I like to call BEC a crazy, hot mess but everything will click if you take the time to understand and not rush.
